ELON MUSK: The Future of AI Power is in Space, Not on Earth. "Once you start thinking in terms of what percentage of the sun's power are you harnessing? You realize you have to go to space and you can't scale very much on Earth. All of the United States currently uses only half a terawatt per hour on average. So you know, if you say a terawatt, that would be twice as much electricity as the United States currently consumes. So that's quite a lot. It's actually very difficult to build power plants and then you don't just need the power plants, you need all of the electrical equipment. Need the electrical transformers to run the transformers. You can build power plants. That's what we did at xAI for Colossus 2. It's very difficult to scale other forms of power. You can scale potentially solar. Solar cells are already very cheap. Now put it in space and it's 10 times cheaper because you don't need any batteries. So the moment your cost of access to space becomes low. By far, the cheapest and most scalable way to generate tokens is space. It's not even close. It'll be an order of magnitude easier to scale five years from now. My prediction is we will launch and be operating every year more AI in space than the cumulative total on Earth."

With just a quick look into some basic physics and logistics of putting a data center in space, the idea becomes comical. First, you have to put massive amounts of hardware, cooling systems, and power into space. Then you have to completely reengineer the data center for space. Then you have to think about maintenance. Oh, and cooling these things down in a vacuum is no easy task. Full Video: #datacenter #space

In space, you can keep a satellite in the sun 24 hours a day. The sun is 30% more intense, which results in six times more irradiance than on Earth. So you don't need a battery. So as soon as the cost to orbit drops to a low number, it immediately makes extremely compelling sense to put AI in space. It becomes a no brainer. Basically, more of a as you go to space, you get increased economies of scale, and things get easier over time, whereas as you try to put more and more power on the ground, you run out of space and you start using up the easy spots, and then you get next level. Nobody wants the thing in their backyard. So then increasing power on earth has becomes harder over time and more expensive over time, but in space it becomes actually cheaper and easier over time."

Saying "NO AI data centers" won't end in victory. They'll just build them anyways. If you truly want to make a difference, you need to say, "No data centers, UNLESS..." Turn it into a negotiation instead of a war, so we can fight over what really matters. No data centers UNLESS they're not draining our energy. In fact, you could say, "you want 10 gigawatts of power? Ok, YOU pay for it. And because we’re allowing you to do it, you have to produce 15 gigawatts of power and give the excess to the grid." It's a win-win and YOU control the terms.

Adaption Labs CEO Sara Hooker says data centers in space are "pretty bonkers", and explains what the current consensus gets wrong: "Most co-located hardware is pretty much for training. I think that's why you care [about Space], otherwise you can distribute. Inference compute, which is where everything's moving towards, you can spread that compute more easily. You can have multiple data centers [on Earth]." "So if you care about space, you probably only care about training compute. I think people underestimate the amount of failures that happen, and you don't want to get your training job interrupted." "The real issue is that GPUs still have failure rates. The 2% of GPUs that are just considered done every year, that's really your cost. It's how quickly you can replace those [in space] and what that looks like."
