Last week, we pushed our Hadfield MK IV engine and Darkhorse engine test cell to their limits ahead of our upcoming thrust vector control (TVC) and orbital engine test campaigns. Success! 🚀 🇨🇦 At 3:45 PM EDT on Friday May 16th, 2025, we successfully tested both our new orbital Darkhorse engine test cell and our new third generation 3D printed Hadfield liquid rocket engine for the first time, marking a significant step towards Canada’s first commercial space launch. The test ran for 7 seconds at our propulsion test range, a company-owned secure site in Northeastern Ontario, successfully delivering nominal thrust, active cooling, and impulse results. This major test of the Darkhorse test cell and Hadfield Mk III engine lays the groundwork for NordSpace's Tundra orbital rocket, as the test cell is specifically designed to integrate with our turbo pump assembly in the next phase of propulsion development. Long duration tests are scheduled for the coming days, along with refinements to fuel mixture ratios and higher-pressure scenarios to test the limits of Darkhorse and our new engines. Minor upgrades and fixes to address a harmless leak in the cryogenic liquid oxygen line and design changes to our experimental control rods have already been made. Hot on the heels of our successful integrated test of our Taiga sub-orbital launch vehicle back in January, rapid developments and approvals at our spaceport in Newfoundland and Labrador, announcement of the SHARP (Supersonics and Hypersonics Applications Research Program), hosting the inaugural Canadian Space Launch Conference in Ottawa, and more - NordSpace is strengthening its position every day to ensure sovereign space launch is not just possible, but probable for Canada. After years of development, testing and refinement, we are printing one of our last Hadfield-10 rocket engines, a bittersweet moment 🫡 More of our team is transitioning toward getting our much larger orbital-class Hadfield-100 engine ready for the test stand, and getting Canada to orbit for the first time with our Tundra rocket. The pressure-fed Hadfield-10 series has been the backbone of NordSpace's propulsion program since our earliest days. It's the engine that proved we could design, manufacture, test and fly liquid rocket engines from scratch, entirely in-house, at the pace necessary to reach orbit. It powered our first successful hot-fire tests, survived our most demanding qualification campaigns, and gave our team the hard-won knowledge that no textbook or simulation could provide. It also powers our Taiga sub-orbital vehicle, which is taking flight in a few weeks. Every experimental lesson learned in its development from combustion stability, regenerative cooling, additive manufacturing, and test operations lives on in what comes next. That knowledge now flows directly into our turbopump fed Hadfield-100 engine, the most powerful rocket engine in Canadian history. 😏Secrets of deceleration assessment… it’s not about the turn.🙋🏽‍♂️ For 15 years I have studied great coaches. A common thread has been that they all use intense actions as movement screens. Thus they have a great coaching eye. ❓Why intense actions? 🙋🏽‍♂️Analysis of sprinting, stoping , turning , hopping, jumping, cutting, backwards running opens a diagnostic window to assess how athletes create pretension and share load across their system. dpfaff has made this clear 🏥Be it for rehab (physios are coaches in my world) or for explosive sports. It’s the same screen, but through different lenses 🧐🤓 👀What are they looking at? 💡The same thing as you. 👀What do they SEE? 🤔Well that’s a different story. Damian Harper, PhD has set the scene for what metrics matter and Tom Dos'Santos has re-clarified the shapes that are safe vs effective for deceleration and COD. ↩️When you watch a 180 degree turn, all the focus is on the turn. Turning and being perturbed at speed is the ultimate speed ability for team sports and also a moment of tragedy for knees and hamstrings. To assess turning efficiency we use vuemotion to measure the shapes , velocities , decelerations and movement efficiency of team sports players. PRESS RELEASE | Hon’ble PM Unveils Loiter Munition Test Range and MALE UAV Runway Test Facility at Solar Nagpur. Big push to Self-reliance in Unmanned Aerial Systems Hon’able PM on his visit to Nagpur on 30 Mar 2025, made his last halt of the day at Solar Defence & Aerospace Ltd (SDAL) Nagpur. Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal, Chairman and Mr Raghav Nuwal welcomed the Hon’able PM at SDAL Helipad. From there he was escorted to Technical Area where Hon’ble PM inaugurated Loiter Munition Test Range. Spread over 1080 acres this test range has a dedicated Command & Control Centre, UAV Take off Area, Endurance and Communication Range check facility, Parachute Recovery Area, Static & Moving Target Engagement, Target Hit and CEP Measurement, Warhead Lethality Test facility, and many more. After the inauguration the PM visited the product gallery wherein SDAL showcased its products like Pinaka Rocket System, Air-bombs, Mines, Grenade, Military Explosives, ATGM, Nagastra 1 & 2 Loiter Munitions, and many more. Thereafter, the PM was then escorted by the Chairman to the newly constructed Air strip where he was received by Mr. Manish Nuwal, MD & CEO, SDAL. He then proceeded to unveil the Plaque to mark the Inauguration of the new 1.27 km Runway Facility for Development & Testing of MALE/HALE Class Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Solar has taken a big initiative for developing a MALE UAV and a suo-moto proposal has already been submitted to IAF which is under consideration. The Prime Minister also witnessed the display of the state of art indigenously developed systems viz. Loiter Munition (Nagastra 3), Bhargavastra (Micro-Missile based Counter Drone System) and Bhaumastra (Mine Detection & Disposal System). Key highlights of displayed systems are as follows: - • Loitering Munitions: Many Indian industries and start-ups have entered drone related technologies and systems mostly focused on surveillance and logistics applications. Use of drones and UAVs for combat applications requires critical competency and infrastructure. Keeping in view the futuristic requirements of this emerging technology, SIDAL has taken the initiative to develop Nagastra series of Loiter Munitions of ranges from 15 km to more than 100 km and explosive payload carrying capability from 1 kg to 10 kg. Nagastra 3 is a Vehicle Launched Loiter Munition System of endurance 3 hours, range 100 km and can carry 8.5 kg warhead. It is being developed under Make 2 project from Arty of Indian Army. • Bhargavastra is an indigenously designed and developed Counter Drone System meant for quick interception of drones for an assured hard kill using tiny, guided missiles with swarm engagement capability. This solution offers mobile protection against drone attacks with near simultaneous engagement of multiple drones. With a long range of detection (upto 6 km) and long range of neutralization (upto 2.5 km), it ensures safety of vulnerable assets/battlefield formations. • SDAL has taken an initiative to address the global menace of land mines detection and disposal. As per some estimates there are more than 11 million buried mines world over which remain uncleared and are causing casualties or maiming of both soldiers and civilians in peace time. Bhaumastra, a drone-based system under development by SDAL, would be the first of its kind in any developed nation to provide a drone-based solution to this global problem. The NS Ural (Russian: атомный ледокол «Урал») stands as one of Russia's and World's most advanced nuclear-powered icebreakers, embodying the country's determination to dominate Arctic shipping routes. As the third vessel in the Project 22220 (also known as LK-60Ya or Arktika-class) series, Ural represents a new generation of versatile, high-powered icebreakers designed for year-round operations in harsh polar conditions. Operated by FSUE Atomflot under Rosatom, it plays a vital role in escorting cargo along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), supporting Russia's energy exports and strategic Arctic ambitions. Construction of Ural began at the Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg, with the keel laid on July 25, 2016.
