My take on this is having an ethics committee. Like Hospitals who need to take difficult decisions in the regulatory grey zone. At the end what ever a firm does, it needs to be a conscious decision.

AI is the first tool in history that can: 1) create new things by itself, 2) make decisions by itself. It cannot be compared to any previous technological revolutions. Inventions like the printing press and even the atom bomb ultimately empowered humans – because humans always decided how to use them. AI, on the other hand, is an autonomous agent that can create and decide without us. How can we go on developing AI without being sure that it will not escape our control? Geoffrey Hinton, who is known as the godfather of AI, used his 2024 Nobel Prize acceptance speech not to celebrate his creation but to warn humanity of its risks: “AI is already being used by authoritarian governments for mass surveillance. In the near future, AI will be used to create new viruses and lethal weapons that decide by themselves who to kill or maim. There is also a long-term existential threat that will arise…We now have evidence that AI created by companies motivated by short-term profits will not prioritize the safety of humanity. We need research on how to prevent these AI beings from taking control. There are two paths for AI to create real value: - It produces something new by itself. - It helps us produce something new. We are still far away from that point. AI systems don't have a human-like observation and generalization capacity, so they can neither create something by themselves nor substantially help us in the creative process. Yet, this doesn't mean that AI investments will subside. The bet is that we'll reach that stage, but it will require huge investments. So, I believe AI investments will continue despite currently lacking a substantial effect on GDP.
