Steve Jobs was a great communicator of technology, and we could learn something from him today, in the context of AI. Sam Altman recently said, "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer." That's a fine quote. The abundance AI promises is super exciting. But Sam is saying that AI is going to figure out how to cure cancer. And if you've used these tools today, and talked to people who are at the labs, the reality is it's much more likely that humans will use AI to cure cancer. Steve might have said: "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, humans can use AI to cure cancer." Small tweak, but a big difference. Steve Jobs was not one to shy away from impressive specs and massive scale, but flipping the final line from "AI will cure cancer" to "Humans will use AI to cure cancer" makes all the difference. Apple under Steve Jobs put human centrality at the heart of everything they did. And we need that spirit to infuse how we communicate about AI today.

Coding, law, accounting, finance, writing, design, analysis, customer service almost everything that educated people do to earn a living will be done better and cheaper by AI. This is not “some jobs will be lost.” This is MASS HUMAN OBSOLESCENCE. Millions of people are about to wake up one day and discover that their skills, their degrees, their experience… are suddenly worthless. There will be no jobs for them. Not fewer jobs. NO JOBS. The harsher truth nobody wants to hear: The elite class has already accepted that they no longer need most human beings to run the economy. And so you're gonna have a whole industry of people taking care of, like for example, you know, all the mechanics and all the people who are building things for cars, supercharging cars, that didn't exist before cars. And now we're gonna have robots. You're gonna have robot apparels. So a whole industry. Because I want my robot to look different than your robot. ... Joe: Don't you think that will all be automated though? Jensen: No, not all of it. Joe: Don't think that'll be done by other robots Jensen: Eventually. And then there'll be something else. White-collar jobs are getting hit harder by AI than blue-collar ones right now. Tasks like writing, data analysis, coding, research, and admin work are exactly what current AI excels at, unlike physical manufacturing work. One analysis puts white-collar automation potential at around 30%, compared to under 1% for blue-collar roles. Goldman Sachs says AI could automate 25% of all US work hours, with 300 million jobs globally exposed, though actual displacement over 10 years might be more like 6-7% of workers. What’s actually happening: AI was linked to about 4.5% of job losses in 2025, and in April 2026 it accounted for 26% of layoffs in one report. Entry-level white-collar roles, junior analysts, coders, paralegals, customer service, are seeing the biggest squeeze, with hiring slowing sharply in AI-exposed fields. BCG projects 50-55% of US jobs will change significantly in the next couple years, but only 10-15% get fully eliminated in the next five. A lot of roles are getting augmented, people using AI tools to work faster rather than being replaced outright. It’s still early, so the big wave of losses some CEOs are warning about hasn’t fully materialized yet. The real story so far is fewer new office jobs being created, especially at the entry level.

Not eventually. Very highly going to be. That single distinction between a job and a task is the most important career diagnosis anyone will hear this decade. If you show up every day to execute a repeatable process, you are the process. And the machine runs processes better than you. Faster. Cheaper. Without breaks. Without errors. Without a salary negotiation. The moment your role can be written as a checklist, the checklist gets automated. And your desk gets cleared. That is not a warning about the future. That is a description of what is already underway. But Huang did not stop at the diagnosis. He handed you the prescription in the same breath. Huang: “If your job’s purpose includes you certain tasks, then it is vital that you go learn how to use AI to automate those tasks.” Your job includes tasks. But your job is not the tasks. Your job is the judgment around them. The decisions. The context. The instinct for why the work matters and what to do when everything breaks. That stays human.
