🚨SPACE BREAKTHROUGH: SPACEX LAUNCHES FIRST ASTEROID MINING MISSION A SpaceX rocket has launched Odin, a spacecraft built by startup AstroForge, on a mission to study asteroid 2022 OB5, which is 1 million miles from Earth. The asteroid is believed to contain platinum and other rare metals used in electronics, medicine, and green energy. Mining these materials on Earth costs £25,000 per kilo, but space could offer a cheaper, less damaging alternative. Odin will travel for 300 days before reaching the asteroid. It will take close-up images to confirm if the surface is metallic. If valuable metals are found, a second mission will attempt to land and extract samples later this year. NEW: NASA has increased the chance a major asteroid smashes into Earth in 2032, now giving it a 3.1% chance, up from 2.6% last week. NASA says the odds the asteroid hits Earth is 1 in 32. It is big enough to wipe out an entire city. The large cities with the highest risk are Bogotá, Abidjan, Lagos, Khartoum, Mumbai, Kolkata and Dhaka. According to experts, the 177-foot diameter asteroid would release 8 megatons of energy on impact, 500 times the energy released by the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. NASA has successfully tested asteroid deflection technologies. China will also be testing its own technology on a small asteroid in 2027. "This is not a crisis at this point in time. This is not the dinosaur killer. This is not the planet killer. This is at most dangerous for a city," said the head of the European Space Agency's planetary defense office, Richard Moissl.

While still low, NASA’s Davide Farnocchia admits a 2%+ impact risk is rare—so, yeah, they’re paying attention. The space rock is 130 to 330 feet wide, big enough to flatten a city if it hits. A similar-sized asteroid in 1908 wiped out 1,250 square miles of Siberian forest—so, not exactly a scratch. NASA has until April to fine-tune its trajectory before the asteroid disappears until 2028. The Webb Telescope will scan it using infrared tech to estimate its exact size—because knowing how big the thing is before it (maybe) hits would be nice. M+147: One of the science experiments that SpaceX CRS-33 brought aboard is the Microgravity Associated Bone Loss-B study, which studies bone-forming adult stem cells in microgravity, providing us a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of bone loss in space. This research also contributes to our understanding of bone loss on Earth, potentially providing ways for us to prevent and treat bone degenerative diseases like osteoporosis. This is how we conduct science in the Life Sciences Glovebox.

In the last few weeks alone, there have been a couple of studies that have shown the health impact of microplastics. One study found microplastics in the human placenta. Another study found that micro and nanoplastics in key arteries, leading to an increased risk of heart attack. One of the interesting startups we have partnered with through Rainmatter by Zerodha is Zerocircle. They have developed and are scaling alternatives to bio-plastic. Here's Neha the founder, talking to Hansi explaining what inspired her and how seaweed can potentially help us with our plastic problem.
