At the time, rumors were circulating that the game would be ported to PC, so when it was suddenly announced for the Super Famicom, it came as a huge shock. Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.

Maybe inspired by the synergy between the PlayStation and Namco’s arcade-compatible hardware, Sega also developed the Dreamcast and NAOMI together to make arcade-to-console ports much easier for their own games. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

If I had to pick Capcom’s greatest 2D beat ’em up, my choices would easily be Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Alien vs. Predator. Capcom’s original beat ‘em ups are fantastic, but there’s something even more exciting about seeing the company work with iconic licensed franchises. The idea of humans and Predators joining forces to fight the Aliens is simply too good to fail. Everything about this game is top-notch—the graphics, sound, controls, and even its faithful recreation of the atmosphere from the films. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre. Sadly, because of licensing issues, it was never released on home consoles, making it one of Capcom’s most disappointing “what could have been” titles.

What surprised me the most was that Super Street Fighter II X, which was hugely popular in arcades at the time, was available on this system. I still remember standing in a game shop, completely mesmerized, staring at that game for a long time. I was really hoping it would come out on the Super Famicom too, but maybe because of hardware limitations, it never did. That made it even more shocking. By the way, the model I’m talking about is the 3DO ALIVE 2 made by LG Electronics. For a lot of foreign friends, this is probably something they’ve never seen before.

For Walt Disney, Snow White was his biggest risk yet. He put all of his finances, both personal and corporate, into its success. If it had failed, it would have been the end of Disney. But it didn’t, and it made Disney what we know it to be today. However, the following three films, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi, failed at the box office, and Walt was broke once again. The Game Boy was launched in 1989, sold almost 120 million units, and was eventually discontinued in 2003 - an incredible lifespan for a handheld console, the longest ever, unless I am overlooking another? One of the games that was availabe with the launch was Super Mario Land, and it became one of its highest selling titles (18 million cartridges), being part of the early and massive success of the Game Boy. By the way, all this with a mere 8 KB of RAM. That's 1/8th of the good old C64. Super Mario Land was essentially a perfect game, getting the absolute maximum out of the Game Boy at the time. I remember that even my mother and sister playing it, while before that computers games were really not their thing at all.

Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.
