I wasn’t sure how to take that, so we joked about it a little. But then we talked about something serious. A few days earlier in Edmonton, a Forever Canada supporter attacked an Alberta independence supporter who was peacefully waving his flag on the side of the road. The man tried to rip the flag away and pushed him toward traffic. That could have ended very badly. We both agree that that kind of behavior is wrong, and the person responsible should be in jail. That matters. We can disagree about Alberta independence. We can debate equalization, immigration, pipelines, federal control, Ottawa, the constitution, and the future of this province. But political violence has no place in this debate. Peaceful Albertans have every right to wave a flag, support a referendum, ask questions, and advocate for Alberta independence without being assaulted or threatened.
