I just rode in a Zoox robotaxi, which is owned by Amazon. It was a 7.6-mile, 25-minute loop along the Las Vegas Strip and back. Some background: Zoox uses cameras, lidars, radar, and long-wave infrared sensors. Their test vehicles build 3D maps of the city. The vehicle has four-wheel steering and has no front or back, so it can go in any direction. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. I’d like to see seat comfort improve as they were too firm and ergonomics weren't great, although I know this is just a test vehicle. There was an interesting interaction with a semi truck on the side of the road, but the rest of the ride went well. Both the adaptive suspension and quietness level in the robotaxi were good. I rode in a Zoox (self-driving Amazon car) today! Overall an amazing experience; another rare time where the present truly looks, feels, and sounds like the future Waymo set a *very* high standard for me to compare to but I feel like Zoox was able to achieve a similar level of polish throughout the experience Pros: • App is great and actually works (rare!) • Driving is very smooth, about the same as a Waymo (both of which are nicer and smoother than most humans) • The leg space and seat layout are great and unparalleled. There's drink holders, usb ports, wireless charging, and music control on touch screen • 10/10 SFX, voice, animations, and subtle details. They matter! Cons: • Service area is small (mostly East Mission + SOMA, see below) • I feel a little less safe in Zoox versus Waymo. Waymo still has a driver's seat, a steering wheel, and more importantly, a dashboard which shows me what the car sees and what it is thinking and planning. Zoox has none of these (the touch screens don't show me LIDAR or AI predictions), which does feel super cool, but will take me a bit to get used to • The vehicle draws attention to itself more so than Waymo due to its irregularity, which I dislike because I don't feel safe in NE Mission and SOMA (but this isn't really Zoox's fault, is it? I trust it to not crash me!) • No Spotify integration but I could choose songs from Zoox FM Misc: • My pickup time was 7min, which is on par with or ~2min above my average Waymo pickup time • My ride was free. Within 10 minutes of the initial incident being reported, San Francisco police had received a call from Waymo passing along suspect information that added to the descriptions being reported by on-scene witnesses. Interesting edge case with Tesla Robotaxi today. As Ellie in Space 🚀💫 and I were arriving at our drop off, a thunderstorm was nearby and support contacted us to say the service needed to pause until the storm passed. Problem was we were in an open park with no cover. We had to end the ride, get out and then resume on the car. Problem was we got a high demand please try again message on the app. The support had to reset the system to allow us to by pass the high demand and then we immediately got another Robotaxi before the rain hit. This is due to the early stage of Robotaxi and the level of caution Tesla is using at the moment.

JUST IN: Houston police k*ll man after he pulls gun during hit-and-run investigation in newly leaked bodycam footage. MAY 17, 2025: Houston Police Officers were dispatched to a crash on the freeway in the 10300 block of the North Freeway and learned that there had been a minor vehicle crash involving three vehicles. Two of the vehicles remained on the scene however a third vehicle had fled the location. Officers then moved the crash off the freeway and put a general broadcast over the radio for the possible third vehicle – a green SUV. Additional Northbelt patrol officers were able to locate the green SUV vehicle in the area and officers made contact with the driver. As the officers attempted to detain the driver of the green SUV for the crash investigation, the driver lifted his shirt up, reached for a visible gun in his waistband and pulled out the weapon. Two HPD officers then discharged their duty weapons more than once, striking the suspect. Officers began to render aid to the suspect until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. (HPD / News release)

After giving Tesla Robotaxi rides to Joseph and Alice Keating, they tried out a few Waymo rides to compare. Here are a few of their observations: “We decided to try a Waymo while we were there as well. We were able to take two trips. The first ride wasn’t bad, pretty similar to robotaxi. The second ride almost hit a pedestrian in one instance and parked cars while making a left turn on a neighborhood street. It had to slam on the breaks both times. Also it took a left turn through a yellow light at the last second before red. During our conversation we talked about whether you could get into the driver seat of Waymo. I took this video walking around the car. It shows that door handle recessed vs the others are popped out, so no way to get in. While we enjoyed both services, we thought the robotaxi was a smoother more confident ride. VIDEO: Carjacking suspect facing murder charges after deadly chain of events in East Dallas FOX 4 NEWS ... DALLAS - A 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder and robbery Thursday after allegedly carjacking a vehicle and crashing into a pedestrian in East Dallas, police said. Tyrell Jones, 25, was arrested after being treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. According to Dallas police, Jones was booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges of murder and robbery. No bond has been set. The Dallas PD arrest affidavit for Jones was released the FOX 4 Friday afternoon. According to the document, witnesses saw Jones appear to be intoxicated on unknown drugs before shoving a victim out of her car, speeding off and hitting another vehicle down the block. The document says Jones first tried to get into the carjacking victim's car several times before falling and appearing hurt, at which point she stopped and got out to check on him. He ran at her again, the document says, and she got back in the car to try to drive away. He then jumped through her window, the document says, pushed her out, and sped off. Other witnesses then saw the stolen car crash into another vehicle stopped at a stop sign, pushing both cars through the intersection and onto the sidewalk. That crash struck a pedestrian, identified as Jose Avila, who ended up pinned between the cars and a tree. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Gina Carpio witnessed the carjacking take place, and spoke with FOX 4 Friday to describe the scene.
