Olomunyak has a penchant for stealing his friends' food. By day, he can be found padding around with Alia, helping himself to the tasty leaves and branches she has selected. By night, we catch him scooping pellets from neighbour Arthi's stockade – never mind the fact that he has his own perfectly generous pile to enjoy! Elephants don't drink through their trunks – they drink with them. A trunk can hold up to 8 litres of water in a single draw. The elephant pulls it up, then curls the trunk to release the water into the mouth. On a hot day at Voi, that sequence repeats over and over. It takes young orphans time to master. Calves are born without full trunk coordination – in their earliest weeks, many kneel at the waterhole and drink directly with their mouth. The trunk comes later, learned by watching older members of the herd. These orphans have it well and truly mastered. Step into Voi:

He will happily take on Taroha and Pardamat at once in a wrestling match, so a troop of baboons is simply too good an opportunity to pass up. He visited last month among a cohort of more than twenty ex-orphans who had padded in from the bush. Sometimes he rocked up with the herd. Other times, he came alone. And sometimes, our Casanova was on a mission: to woo Suswa! The two elephants spent two or three days together, so we look forward to seeing whether the pitter-patter of tiny feet comes from that sojourn. Although everyone gives him the respect he is due, Laikipia is very tolerant of the dependent orphans. When he arrived for breakfast after his honeymoon, he scooped up range cubes next to Kenderi at the feeding trough and then drank from the water trough next to Lemeki. Taroha has developed a new habit: he finishes his first milk bottle and puts it down normally. He finishes his second – and walks away with it clasped in his trunk. When a Keeper tries to get it back, he runs! His enthusiasm is the same as it was in May 2024 (listen for that rumble at the end!). Taroha came to us by way of a JCB bucket. He had been found alone on the shores of Lake Jipe and it was the only vehicle rescuers had access to at the time. By the time he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery, his journey had included an overnight stay at our Voi Unit and a flight aboard an aeroplane. But he was safe, and with his new family:

Kaikai has just turned one, which is still small in elephant terms – the older orphans get the best of any greens at standing height, so she has to work hard to get hers. Luckily, she has a helping hand in the form of her Keepers who will help pluck the freshest greens and fruits off the bushes for the orphans. Pardamat headbutted Daba last month. The little boy trumpeted, lost his balance, and went down. Muridjo was across the clearing before the sound had finished echoing. Pardamat got a firm shove and Daba got a gentle nudge back to his feet. Kipekee remains Muridjo's favourite – the two seen sharing a quiet moment here – but since Kerrio's graduation, Muridjo looks after all of them now.
