Day 049, orbit 0759 – Another experiment, and another timelapse! This time, I’m working with the Fluid Science Laboratory (FSL), one of the science facilities inside ESA’s Columbus module. The experiment is called PASTA-3 and investigates the formation and evolution of emulsions over time when there is no gravity to interfere. Emulsions are mixtures of two or more liquids that do not usually mix, such as oil and water. During this session, I installed 3 experiment containers 🧪 with new samples inside the FSL. Each PASTA sample has a different concentration of surfactant (an agent that helps liquids mix) and Xanthan Gum in addition to a water and oil mixture. This experiment helps scientists better understand and model the fundamental physics of emulsions. That knowledge has numerous applications on Earth, including: - improving food quality and shelf life (milk 🥛, dough, mayonnaise, candy…), - enhancing the stability and effectiveness of medicines (including vaccines 💉) and cosmetics, - optimising processes in industrial and advanced manufacturing sectors (oil 🛢️, chemicals …). Very excited to announce that at 12:20am on the 4th of July, Aalo achieved criticality on our first full-scale reactor. We cut it close, but we pulled it off!! Working towards this goal with such an incredible group of humans has been the most fulfilling period of my life. This moment has been three years in the making. Last year, Executive Order 14301 called for at least three new reactors to go critical before July 4th, 2026. As of late last Friday night, that goal has been surpassed! When the EO was announced, we immediately sat down to figure out what the most ambitious scope would be, while still being potentially achievable by July 4th. Some of the team proposed doing simplified designs with smaller fuel loads, or building in existing facilities. One thing was clear: We wouldn't have time to integrate a full-scale sodium heat-removal loop to bring the reactor to its full 30 MWt. So here’s where we landed: ➡️ We purchased the entire commercial-scale fuel load. This is enough fuel to operate at 30 MWt / 10 MWe for 3 years before refueling. To my knowledge, it’s the largest fuel load that’s been taken critical in the DOE pilot program, by far. ➡️ We built a full-scale reactor vessel in our factory, and loaded in our commercial graphite layout. All the dimensions, vessel thickness, and manufacturing techniques are essentially the same as we will use for the imminent commercial version. There will be a few minor tweaks for sodium flow and full-power, but nothing major. ➡️ We built an entirely new reactor facility at the Idaho National Lab. Building a building is easy. Building a new reactor facility comes with a mountain of paperwork, policies, operation and training procedures, security, instrumentation and control, and more. Zero-power criticality might seem like a small step, but I can tell you, going through the exercise of building a reactor and taking it to criticality has been extremely valuable. The learnings on regulatory, ops, manufacturing, supply chain, QA, economics, engineering, and design will accelerate our path through to the final iteration at full-power. America is blessed to have a recent Cambrian explosion of startups in nuclear, all going after different markets, technologies, and strategies. I’m excited that sodium, gas, salt, and new PWRs are all getting pushed forward once again. The best outcome for humanity is to have all these advance in parallel, as quickly as possible, while maintaining safety. Thanks again to our amazing team, DOE, INL, BEA, and everyone else who helped us get to where we are today. This could not have happened anywhere else. Demis Hassabis, the Nobel Prize winner who runs Google DeepMind just described the most consequential project on earth, and most people have no idea it exists. The project is called Isomorphic Labs and the goal is to end the way drugs have been developed for the last century. Here is the problem it is trying to solve. Developing a single drug today takes an average of 10 years, costs billions of dollars, and fails 90 percent of the time before it ever reaches a patient. Of every 10 drugs that enter clinical trials, only one makes it through. The other nine years of work, the other billions of dollars, the other scientific careers, gone. Hassabis believes AI can collapse that entire process from identifying a disease target to designing a compound that binds to it, predicts how it behaves in the body, and minimizes side effects , end to end, on a computer, before a single experiment is run. The foundation is AlphaFold, the AI system that solved one of biology's hardest problems predicting the 3D structure of every protein in the human body and won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024. But knowing a protein's shape is only one part of designing a drug. Isomorphic is building what Hassabis describes as adjacent systems , AlphaFold 3, AlphaFold 4, and now a unified model called IsoDDE , that take the next steps. From designing the actual chemical compound that binds to the protein, predicting its binding strength, identifying new pockets to target that no one has ever found before. IsoDDE more than doubles the accuracy of AlphaFold 3 on the hardest protein-ligand prediction benchmarks that exist. Isomorphic is already running 18 to 19 live drug programs, cardiovascular disease, cancer, immunology in partnership with Eli Lilly, Novartis, and Johnson and Johnson. The first human clinical trial of a fully AI-designed drug is expected by the end of 2026. Chinese organized crime is using slave labor to rob American seniors. There is a compound in Myanmar called KK Park. It sits on the Thai border. It has a name. A place on the map. It is visible from space. Inside, thousands of people who are not free to leave spend their days messaging American retirees about cryptocurrency. That is one compound. There are dozens more. Americans lost $20.9 billion to fraud last year. Of the losses we can trace to a location, more than half lead back to two countries. Myanmar and Cambodia. The UN has estimated that 120,000 people may be held in Myanmar's compounds and 100,000 in Cambodia's. Held, not hired. Most were recruited abroad with fake job offers, moved across a border, and only then found out they could not leave. The syndicates running these operations are Chinese. Americans over 60 lost $7.7 billion last year, up from $4.8 billion the year before. Americans lost $20.9 billion to fraud last year. Of the losses we can trace to a location, more than half lead back to two countries. Myanmar and Cambodia. The year before, the US government traced at least $10 billion of American losses to scam operations run out of Southeast Asia. A 66% jump in one year. The UN has estimated that 120,000 people may be held in Myanmar's compounds and 100,000 in Cambodia's. Held, not hired. Most were recruited abroad with fake job offers, moved across a border, and only then found out they could not leave. The syndicates running these operations are Chinese. Americans over 60 lost $7.7 billion last year, up from $4.8 billion the year before. The 10-year investigation, dubbed "Operation Bid Rig," exposed influence-peddling and bribe-taking among a network of public officials and a separate multimillion dollar money-laundering ring that funnelled funds through charities operated by local rabbis, said the U.S. Attorney's office in Newark, New Jersey. At the end of July when 10 people, among them several rabbis, were arrested in New Jersey, USA, it was assumed that this was little more than a case of tax fraud by another charity. Charities often run foul of the law by failing, quite innocently, of fulfilling their legal obligations. But the New Jersey arrests pointed to something much bigger. There were not only politicians involved in corruption scandals — again not unusual for the US — but rabbis selling organs imported from Israel. One of them, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum from Brooklyn, described himself to an FBI agent whom he believed to be a client, as a “matchmaker”. The rabbi was not talking about romance; it was more serious: buying and selling kidneys from Israel. He admitted that he purchased kidneys from ‘poor people’ in Israel for $10,000 and sold them for $160,000 each in the US. And he had been in this business for decades In addition to the tidy profit the learned rabbi and his fellow travelers were making was the more sinister plot of harvesting the kidneys of Palestinian youth shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers. Dragging their bodies away, their organs were removed at hospitals to be sold. Palestinian families have for years complained about the ripped bodies of their children handed over to them by Israeli soldiers who forced their burial in the middle of the night, but the full extent of the crime has just come to light. Illegal trade in organs is nothing new but the New Jersey-Israeli connection points to something absolutely criminal. A report by Donald Bostrom in a Swedish paper on August 3 highlights the harvesting of Palestinian organs by Israeli doctors. He writes that at a conference in 2003, Israel was singled out as the only ‘Western’ country where doctors do not condemn illegal trade of organs or take measures against doctors who conduct such illegal operations, according to Dagens Nyheter (December 5, 2003). Bostrom narrates the story of Bilal Ahmed Ghanem from the West Bank village of Imatin who was shot and wounded by the Israelis and then loaded on to a jeep and driven away. Five days later, his body, ripped across the front from the neck to below the navel was brought for burial in the middle of the night. His relatives were forced to dig the grave. Bilal was one of 69 youth out of 133 killed that year that had autopsies performed on their bodies. The relatives had no doubt: his organs had been removed.
