the chicken is being trained to choose the correct color palette in order to receive a food reward. Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning that involves training an agent to make decisions in an environment by rewarding or penalizing it based on its actions. And in this case, the chicken is the agent, and the environment is the color palette.

During the recent IROS2023 conference in Detroit, the Disney Research Center unveiled a new social robot that has been trained using reinforcement learning simulations. Over the course of a year, the robot has practiced animation and walking independently, resulting in smooth overall movement and free head movement. An operator controls the robot through a control facility, providing commands. Disney plans to utilize this robot, along with other technologies from the Disney Research Center, in areas such as park shows, film production, and television. The robot is capable of traversing bumpy terrain and has a unique style. The Disney Research Center, located in Zurich, Switzerland, collaborates closely with technical departments from Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and Disney Pictures, focusing on advancing technology and creative services in film production.

In this video, the hen learns to peck the pink pad to get some grains. Plot twist: to confirm that the hen has truly reinforced its learning it would not peck on any pad when the pink one is removed.

notes on my reinforcement learning for rocket league side quest so far: i’m in awe that — we live in a time where i can train a reinforcement learning model that is learning to play rocket league and at the same time, test community made rocket league models. where, both processes can run in parallel & locally on my hardware. in the game window — i’m playing against a reinforcement learning ppo model that’s running locally. and in the vscode window — i’m training my own reinforcement learning model (just a dummy example script for now). also, the rocket league botting ecosystem has incredible tooling where you can test out different reinforcement learning ideas against other algorithms + it has great documentation for linux and windows. it’s honestly a beautiful hidden gem of a rabbit hole :)
