Contact-rich tasks like these have long been considered one of the hardest challenges in Sim2Real. Gemini Robotics 2 shows simulation can work even here. Octopus inspired robot! 🐙 Researchers at the National University of Singapore have created a streamlined octopus-inspired swimming robot capable of replicating the animal’s agile movement through water. Unlike previous designs that require eight actuators for each arm, this robot simplifies the mechanics using just two motors and an umbrella-like mechanism to coordinate its eight soft arms. As it swims, the robot’s arms gently open to reduce drag, then quickly close to generate thrust mimicking the jet-propulsion used by real octopuses. In lab tests, it reached speeds up to 314 mm/s. Eris and Dimitris Sako, two brothers in Zurich (Duatic), spent years inside ETH’s Robotic Systems Lab staring at this exact problem. Their answer: control the muscle. The Story of the Giant Octopus in Alaska in 2020 🐙 In 2020, underwater photographer Justin Hofman was scuba diving off the coast of Alaska, home to the giant Pacific octopus, the largest octopus species in the world. They can span more than 4.5 meters (over 15 feet) from arm tip to arm tip and weigh over 50–70 kg, with some individuals exceeding 100 kg. While diving, Justin encountered a giant octopus that had just caught a crab. It was puffed up and highly excited. The octopus approached him, first wrapping its tentacles around his camera. Then it began to “explore” Justin with curiosity even using its specially long arm (the one used to seek out mates) to touch and feel him. Justin decided to offer his hand so he could feel the suckers. At first the octopus got a little too interested and pulled quite hard. When Justin gently pulled his hand back, it seemed to understand right away and became much gentler. After that, it continued to explore his dry suit and scuba gear in a very careful manner. Justin later recalled: “It felt like a true interaction between two thinking beings… like meeting an alien.” An octopus’s suckers are extremely sensitive, almost as if each one has its own “brain”, allowing them to sense and process information with remarkable precision. After a few minutes of mutual curiosity, the octopus realized Justin was neither food, nor a potential mate, nor a threat. It calmly crawled away through the kelp and disappeared among the rocks. The video of this moment clearly shows the intelligence, curiosity, and even a sense of boundaries in octopuses, the very reasons scientists consider them among the most intelligent animals in the ocean.

This is what open robotics actually looks like! 🔓 I was in Bordeaux, sitting inside Pollen Robotics, and had a chance to play around with their humanoid robot Reachy 2. It’s expressive, modular, and can even bring you coffee, and of course runs Python or Rust. I was talking with Reachy in 3 different languages, tele-operating it and manipulating kitchen stuff, and make it even mimic my gestures. The best part is that there are no locked APIs, or hidden stuff, just an open platform that you can build upon. The connection with Hugging Face makes it super easy to start, as the open source approach allows everyone to contribute, experiment and add their own things. China has developed a 3-kg bionic robotic fish designed to move underwater more naturally and quietly than conventional underwater drones. Its body uses seven sections and three movable tail joints to mimic the movement of a real fish. The robot can reportedly operate autonomously for around 5 hours on a charge and carries a front-mounted sonar system for monitoring its underwater surroundings. But its most interesting feature may be its appearance—it is designed to resemble an ordinary fish, potentially making it harder to notice.
