Microplastics have been found in 100% of sperm samples tested. Studies show microplastics are linked to abnormal sperm shape and impaired motility, which means sperm can’t move as efficiently—bad news for fertility. 31% of the microplastics found in sperm come from polystyrene, a plastic commonly used in food packaging. Even worse, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)—used in water pipes—breaks down and leaches microplastics into tap water, a major source of exposure. Microplastics often contain BPA, a known endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen. Research shows that men with higher BPA levels have significantly lower testosterone and reduced sperm quality. Reducing exposure is key: avoid heating plastics, use stainless steel or glass for drinking, and filter tap water with systems like reverse osmosis that remove microplastics. The goal is not panic—but informed action. It just took one bad rainy season for Bengaluru to face a massive water shortage crisis. Given that extreme weather conditions will only become more common, this probably won't be the last time we face this crisis. I learned recently that wastewater could be part of the solution. Bengaluru's total freshwater demand is ~2632 (million litres a day) MLD, and it generates ~2000 MLD of wastewater. Of this, centralized sewage treatment plants treat ~1,300 MLD, and this water is used for agricultural purposes. About 3,500 apartments and commercial establishments have decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) and waste ~80% of their excess STP water. This STP water is low quality and mostly unusable beyond flushing and gardening. If this excess STP water can be converted to high-quality water, about 450–500 MLD of water demand could be met by decentralized treatment plans. Boson White Water is one startup we met that is trying to solve the problem of converting STP water to potable water.

You finish, grab the communal sponge-on-a-stick, dip it in the flowing water to “wipe,” then toss it back in vinegar for the next guy. Civilization, they called it. We went from this to heated toilet seats and still complain. 😂

What if I told you the most remarkable feat of engineering occurred over 4,500 years ago? The stepped pyramid of Djoser built circa ~2,600 BCE is widely recognized as the first pyramid in Ancient Egypt. But did you know it had a “moat” a dry moat they call it, that surrounded the pyramid. A study published not that long ago proved it was not remotely dry, water from a check dam was diverted from a “wadi” (a natural valley that collects rain water) directly into the moat. As luck would have it this was once excavated. And with that the publishers of the study proved something they didn’t even realize. The moat is identical to a modern water filtration system.
