As the community watched, they rallied in support of the man, and the officers. The officers were trying to talk him down from the state he was in, you can tell they didn’t want to have to hurt him. He was only wearing the cross, and the chain broke. I think the chain could have hit the RODE mic, causing it to shatter. Taking his shirt off or a struggle in the SUV could have caused it to shatter more. It could have been stepped on in the car too, explaining the pieces on the floor.
