The film was created by two atheists, Konchalovsky and Tarkovsky. During filming, they set fire to the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir, home to Andrei Rublev's frescoes. They also killed a horse and burned a cow. The film failed to find vengeance for Sergius of Radonezh.

The producers and some of the crew members wanted Tarkovsky to use edited footage to complete the film. Tarkovsky, who had never compromised for his art, persuaded them that a retake was necessary, since he believed that this scene was the soul and essence of the movie. For the retake, the house was reconstructed within 2 weeks & it was set on fire again. This time everything went according to plan.
