There is a science lab onboard the International Space Station called the Life Sciences Glovebox. It’s one of the places we conduct biological and life science experiments in a controlled environment. It can control temperature, humidity, and even has a negative pressure environment so we can work with hazardous materials. Recent experiments in the LSG include a study to determine how bone cells can respond to various conditions in microgravity and determining if higher fidelity protein crystallization in space can yield more effective drugs. Here’s a short video describing what it is and how we deploy it.

Another timelapse view into our beloved International Space Station Lifesciences Glovebox – this time to harvest the stem cells and conclude the experiment (May 28 post). This goal of this experiment was to produce stem cells in large numbers, using the innovative microgravity bioreactor seen inside the glovebox. Stem cell therapies provide significant benefits to help patients fight disease or recover from chemotherapy. The scientists behind this experiment hypothesized that space-grown cells may retain the ability to continuously divide for longer than stem cells on Earth, which could create larger supplies of cells crucial to provide therapies for patients back on Earth. Stay tuned, because the initial results appear incredibly promising!

M+147: One of the science experiments that SpaceX CRS-33 brought aboard is the Microgravity Associated Bone Loss-B study, which studies bone-forming adult stem cells in microgravity, providing us a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of bone loss in space. This research also contributes to our understanding of bone loss on Earth, potentially providing ways for us to prevent and treat bone degenerative diseases like osteoporosis. This is how we conduct science in the Life Sciences Glovebox.
