Fun fact: It would take the average PC roughly 138,069,000 hours or about 15,761 years to render Avatar: The Way of Water. Here’s how I worked it out: The average PC in 2024 has 6 cores. The average blade on WetaFXs renderfarm has between 16-64 cores. There is roughly 414,000 frames in the finished film, accounting for half of the film being 48fps and half being 24fps at the final runtime of 192 minutes. Each frame took an average of 20-80 hours to render on WetaFXs blades depending on shot complexity and accounting for the 4K delivery resolution. With that info, we can work out the average: We say that the average Weta blade has 40 cores (average between the 16-64 count). That gives a Weta to PC core ratio of 6.67 We also say that the average render time per frame is 50 hours (average of 20-80) Total render time for Weta: 50 hours x 414,000 frames = 20,700,000 hours To work out how long this would be on the average home PC we must multiply by the core ratio from earlier: 50 hours x 6.67 = 333.5 hours per frame Total render time on a home PC: 333.5 hours x 414,000 frames = 138,069,000 hours, which converted to years is 15,761 DISCLAIMER: This is all an educated guess done for fun based on publicly available technical information about the film and Wetas renderfarm. Assassins Creed: Shadows PC Port is absolute garbage. I'm playing AC: Shadows both on Console and PC, unfortunately even if you have a high-end PC, the Game stutters on PC. This is most likely because of Denuvo and bad Optimization. The Frametime is so bad I can't even begin to describe it, I'm forced to turn Frame-Gen on just to have a smooth experience. Disabling Frame-Gen and even running this Game on the lowest possible settings still results in a sub-par experience. This clip credit to zWORMz Gaming shows him trying to run AC: Shadows with Max Settings on an RTX 5070 Ti with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the Game still struggles to hit 60FPS! having specs anything even below these ones means that the Game will run even worse on most PC Gamers. The PC Port is terrible.

Monster Hunter Wilds big performance patch is out on PC. I spoke with the user who originally discovered the DLC bug and they confirmed that it seems to be fixed. More improvements I noticed from some quick testing (continued): • Better 1% lows for smoother gameplay with less hitching and stutter • Lower VRAM usage (10+ GB -> 7.5GB) • Higher FPS in some cases • CPU optimizations • High res texture pack is actually usable now • Lowered the install size by 45GB with texture pack • Some users report that their new frame rate WITHOUT FG = old frame rate WITH FG • More graphics options to tweak Overall, this update seems to have done the trick. Still not 100% perfect but MUCH better than it was before. The recent Steam reviews have also been very positive so it seems that most agree. Another patch is coming in February with even more optimizations for both PC and console. Settings and PC specs at the end - this was the default recommended settings at 4K DLSS Performance, Frame Gen off, 16x AF (roughly the High preset). Finally, Capcom didn't credit anyone in the Patch Notes so shoutout to de_Tylmarande for originally bringing the DLC bug to people's attention. #MonsterHunter #MonsterHunterWilds

Last week Jez Corden threw out a rumour #PlayStation may be scaling things back on PC. Jez's track record's questionable. This week Parris weighed in too, stating he'd heard similar from a good source. He also says: "They'd lean more towards stop doing PC altogether, before they would do day and date." While I've no idea if the rumours are true or not, I have spoken on how recent PlayStation tenpole single player titles have sold poorly on PC and had significantly lower Steam peak player numbers than their predecessors did, despite them selling faster than their predecessors on PlayStation (with lower primary install bases). Steam peak players Spider-Man - 66.5k Spider-Man 2 - 28.1k God of War - 73.5k Ragnarok - 36.6k PlayStation console sales Spider-Man - 13m in 11 months Spider-Man 2 - 11m in 6 months God of War - 10m in 14 months Ragnarok - 11m in less than 3 months Did many PC gamers lose interest, or could it be that more PC gamers who were interested in these PS games, already bought a PS5 in that time? The latter is what numerous PS execs stated was the strategy with staggered PC releases; a trojan horse to get PC gamers to consider a PS5 (even as a secondary system), not just a means to gain extra software sales. There's further data to support it's working. I tested out Cyberpunk 2077 Path Tracing turned on with RX 9070 XT now that FSR Redstone is out. By using the new FSR Redstone and FSR ML Based Frame-Gen, the game reaches up to 130FPS in 1440p with FSR set to Performance Mode. The performance gains are not that much higher compared to the previous versions of FSR but the image quality got a huge upgrade, especially when using Frame-Gen. This ML based Frame Gen is much better than the previous version as it gets rid of most artifacts and ghosting caused by the previous version. If for some reason you always wanted to play Cyberpunk 2077 with Path Tracing turned on on an AMD GPU, now you can enjoy a playable experience with 100+ FPS on an RX 9070 XT. I still don't recommend it though as the frame pacing and input lag still feels off for me, I'd just rather play this without Frame Gen and Path Tracing. I'm going to test out Black Myth: Wukong next

The reason why Reflections in GTA 6 look noisy and blurry isn't because Rockstar Games doesn't know how to do them or that a $2 billion budget magically fixes this. It all comes down to the GPU in current gen consoles, these consoles don't have the power they need to render high resolution Ray Traced reflections in real-time and corners had to be cut. Here I'm running GTA 5 enhanced for PC at ultra settings to show you how good and clean the reflections look if you have high-end and recent hardware that have AI upscaling to make this possible. That being said, The PS5 Pro console is much more powerful compared to the base PS5 (the footage which GTA 6 was captured) offering higher resolution, 45% faster rendering, 2X-3X better Ray Tracing performance and PSSR upscaling. With the PS5 Pro, it will have significantly better looking and sharper reflections somewhat close to what GTA 5 Enhanced reflections look like on a gaming PC at high settings. However, the ultimate experience will still be on PC when GTA 6 launches, allowing for the highest quality Ray Tracing or even Path Tracing if Rockstar Games decides to implement it.

A big part of scaling robot learning to solve real-world problems is that we somehow need to get enough diverse, high-quality data to train our robots to perform useful things. GPT and its fellow large language models were bootstrapped and proved out on a massive dataset of real-world language data. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, similarly massive datasets don’t really exist for robotics — so, in our unending pursuit of high-quality, useful data, we turn to simulation. Here's a look behind the scenes of how I used a 3d model, generated from an image, as a "driver" for ai animation. In the near future we'll see more 3d tools that support these types of workflows, with much more emphasis on enhancing user input instead of just letting the ai do everything. I used the 3d model to generate keyframes that I then animated in Luma Dream. By using a 3d model with a diffusion "layer" done with Krea, I got quite high quality frames with a relatively high consistency as well since the AI didn't have to "hallucinate" that much. I upscaled and detailed the frames using Magnific. Using semi-detailed 3d models as drivers for gen ai is very powerful, and it allows us to use models that are sculpted in a more free-flowing type of workflow that doesn't rely so much on high surface detailing or very time-consuming finish, but instead relies more on gestural 3d sculpting. #art #ai
