Reckless Driver Arrested After Eluding Police Across Redmond; Drone Program Helps Track Vehicle Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the early morning hours of April 23 after noticing it had no license plates. The driver accelerated well above the posted speed limit and failed to stop, ignoring emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle continued through Redmond, running red lights, making dangerous turns, and driving at high speeds. At one point, the driver returned toward an officer, flashing high beams in an apparent attempt to provoke a pursuit, and drove into oncoming traffic. Due to the reckless behavior and risk to the public, officers did not engage in a pursuit. Multiple drones were deployed remotely from docking locations throughout the city by a single Drone as First Responder (DFR) pilot, allowing officers to maintain continuous visual contact with the vehicle as it drove recklessly across Redmond. With assistance from aerial support, officers tracked the vehicle as it continued driving dangerously through the area, including SR-520 and downtown Redmond. Spike strips were successfully deployed, and the vehicle was later located at an apartment complex. Officers conducted a high-risk stop, and the driver was taken into custody without incident. The individual was arrested for eluding a police vehicle and further investigated for DUI. The driver was under the legal drinking age, and an open alcoholic beverage was found inside the vehicle. The individual was also driving with a suspended license. This type of reckless driving puts everyone at risk. Thank you to assisting units for their coordinated response.

Quick thinking #DCSO deputies catch another auto theft suspect. On Monday night, patrol deputies responded to a report of an in-progress vehicle theft on Mill Vista Road in Highlands Ranch. Responding deputies quickly established a perimeter and began searching the area. The vehicle was located, occupied, in a parking garage on Mill Vista Road. Upon observing law enforcement in the area, the suspect vehicle attempted to back out of a parking space. The deputy activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and pulled forward to signal the suspect to stop. The suspect vehicle accelerated forward, scraping, and colliding with the front passenger side push bumper of the patrol vehicle. The vehicle ran a stop sign and sped away. Deputies pursued the vehicle for a short distance, and the suspect vehicle spun out of control and rolled backwards into a metal railing, where it was pinned in place by deputies. The suspect, later identified as Armon Chism (DOB: 05/15/1982), of Denver, fled from the vehicle, and a short foot pursuit was initiated by pursuing deputies. The suspect was placed into custody after a successful taser deployment. While conducting their investigation, deputies were able to establish probable cause that Chism was a suspect in an earlier vehicle pursuit of a stolen Hyundai Tucson at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and County Line Road. Chism was found to be in possession of the stolen Hyundai ignition key and the vehicle was recovered nearby. Chism was booked into the Douglas County Jail for investigation of Motor Vehicle Theft, Vehicular Eluding, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Fentanyl), Protection Order Violation, and Criminal Impersonation. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said, “We will not allow criminals to victimize Douglas County residents. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community will continue to work tirelessly to protect our residents and their property. I am so proud of my deputies who responded quickly and didn’t give up until this suspect was in custody.”

It was just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday when the first call came in saying a man was driving recklessly and yelling at people near 20thand Broadway. It only got worse. Another call came in saying the driver had struck another car with his vehicle and left the scene. A caller said the driver could be seen drinking from a beer bottle while driving. As officers searched the area, a call came in saying the car was on the bike path and had almost hit a cyclist. Thankfully Officer Baddley spotted the vehicle a short time later on Baseline Road and coordinated with Officer West to safely stop the driver from going anywhere else. Officers could smell alcohol on the driver, and his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. He was arrested and booked into the jail on two misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, misdemeanor hit and run, misdemeanor reckless driving, resisting arrest, failure to present evidence of insurance, and felony vehicular eluding. As in every criminal case, suspects are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty. We’re glad this incident didn’t have a worse outcome as it easily could have. There’s no excuse to drive impaired. You risk the lives of yourself and everyone around you. Our officers have stepped up their efforts to find impaired drivers and have made more DUI arrests so far this year than previous years due to a variety of factors. It’s sad that one of those factors is that some people think it’s okay to drink and drive. It. Is. Not. We will find and arrest you.

🚨 Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends in Arrest 🚔 Graves B deputies were alerted by a Flock camera to a stolen vehicle. Deputies quickly responded and located the vehicle, which was parked at an apartment complex. As one deputy waited for backup, the suspect unexpectedly drove off. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver fled, initiating a pursuit. Deputies successfully deployed stop sticks, deflating some of the vehicle's tires, but the suspect continued to flee. A Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) was used and was initially successful, but as deputies attempted to pin the vehicle, the suspect rammed a patrol car and kept going. A second TVI was performed and successfully disabled the vehicle. The suspect then fled on foot but was caught after a short foot pursuit. One deputy was transported to the hospital after their patrol vehicle was struck. Thankfully, they are expected to make a full recovery. A search of the vehicle revealed narcotics and other suspicious items. The driver (a Denver resident) was arrested and charged with: •Motor Vehicle Theft (F4) •Assault in the Second Degree – Peace Officer (F4) •Vehicular Eluding (F5) •Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (DF4) •Reckless Endangerment (M2) •Unlawful Possession of Schedule III, IV, V Controlled Substances (DM1) •Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (DPO) •Driving Under Restraint (Traffic Offense) •Failure to Obey Traffic Signal (Traffic Offense) •Driving on Wrong Side of Roadway (Traffic Offense) •3 Counts – Violation of Protection Order (M1) •Criminal Possession of a Financial Device (M2) Additionally, the suspect had 2 active felony warrants and 2 misdemeanor warrants. “Outstanding teamwork by our deputies brought this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion. Let me be clear: criminals are not welcome in Douglas County. If you come here to commit crimes, we will pursue you, and we will catch you. We are grateful for the bravery of our deputies,” said Sheriff Darren Weekly. Note: A charge is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Remember that short pursuit on Monday with a stolen vehicle that crashed into a pole at Alameda and Peoria?🚔 ➡️This city camera video we’re releasing today shows this wasn’t just a risky split-second decision, the danger started long before the engine even revved. The passenger was 41-year-old Sheena Fuentes, who you might remember was arrested in October for accessory to murder related to an October 24th homicide on Del Mar Circle. She was out on bond for that charge at the time of the pursuit and crash. And the driver? That was 52-year-old Manuel Tovar, a man with an extensive criminal history. The pair were in a confirmed stolen car and took off at high speed, tried to make a fast left onto Alameda, and lost control. The car hit a pole and both died on scene. The vast majority of those who decide to elude our officers, and we pursue, have a criminal history. Only 16% of our pursuits end in crashes. This is yet another reminder: People who run from police don’t just break the law, they gamble with lives, including their own. Our crime stats are not just numbers. Behind every number is a real person whose life has been changed by crime. We are here to keep our Aurora community safe. If someone chooses to break the law and flee in a stolen vehicle, we will pursue them, and we will hold them accountable. #APDInAction [Media Description: Video showing pursuit and crash with suspects former booking photos.]

Sometimes the most dangerous situations start with something simple … like expired plates. ‼️ Yesterday just after 10 a.m., one of our traffic officers attempted to stop a driver of a pickup towing a trailer with years-old expired tags on southbound I-225 at East 17th Place. The driver had other ideas. And from there, you’ll see. Lives could have changed in an instant. Despite activating lights and siren, the driver not only refused to stop but also swerved toward our officer on his motorcycle. Thankfully, our officer was able to hit the brakes to avoid a collision, even after a large box flew off the back of the pickup.🚔 The suspect then blew through a red light, trying to evade our traffic officer who continued the pursuit undeterred despite nearly being run over. The suspect drove recklessly through the Fitzsimons Parkway area, at one point making another run at another responding officer while also weaving into oncoming traffic. When he crashed into a fence in the 1900 block of Akron Street, he tried to run. Spoiler alert: running rarely works. Thanks to a detailed description from the original motor officer and alert community members who saw him discarding clothing, officers quickly established a perimeter and located 39-year-old Kyle Secrist. Insolent even in his capture, the suspect had the audacity to ask approaching officers, “What did I do?” Secrist was detained without further incident and arrested for attempted homicide, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, vehicular eluding and motor vehicle theft…did we forget to mention the pickup he was driving AND the trailer were both stolen? The suspect’s criminal history spans 20+ pages and includes dangerous drug offenses, parole violations, assault, burglary, menacing, habitual traffic offender and DUI offenses, and child abuse. Expired plates are fixable. Trying to run over a police officer is not.➡️ Our officers never know when a routine stop will turn into something more. They show up anyway. Officer safety is not just a talking point. It is real. It is unpredictable. And it is a risk our officers accept every day to keep this community safe.
