It's as if FBI were investigating Trump family companies, which is unimaginable, right? TARLOV: That's very funny. APPLEBAUM: In other words, these are Ukrainian... inside the government organizations that are dedicated to looking for corruption and fighting it. And so, actually, what you have, this exposure of corruption, is evidence of democratic institutions working in Ukraine. The fact that so much is known, that it's openly discussed, that people debate it and talk about what should be done. Michael Clarke: When people in the States say, "Oh, look how corrupt Ukraine is," I’d say, "First of all, pal, I think Ukraine, objectively, is less corrupt than United States is these days." You can construct sensible argument, which says: "Ukrainians talk about corruption because it bothers them. You guys have stopped talking about it because it doesn’t bother you anymore. You’ve normalized it." I think there’s sensible argument to say that Ukraine is less corrupt than the United States.

The fact that people on the streets are telling the government what they really think, and the government has no alternative but to do it. That's an exercise in direct democracy. It's messy, it may not work out all that well, but Ukraine is working its way, stumbling its way towards a modern, capitalist, free-trading, liberal democracy. The sort that we've become used to in Western Europe. We take it for granted that we are all these things. Ukraine is trying to approach that, and it's getting there.

AOC on Vance/Watergate: I think what it reveals more is about what JD Vance’s vision for America is, is that he wants more of the same. He doesn't want anything to change in this country. He wants to continue the reality that corruption is banal, normal. And he loves the way that the country is being governed right now. He loves that you can start an illegal war and make tons of people rich, send Americans into harm's way, and that it'll barely be a blip in on people's radar. He loves that we can engage in record levels of corruption and get away with it. And so in that statement, it's less about the acknowledgment of the reality, but it's that his vision for the future is exactly the same, and that your life won't change if so long as he's in charge.
