Price controls are Communism 101 but they "sound good" to the economic illiterate. Price controls are one of the oldest economic polices ever tried. They have always been a failure. The Roman emperor Diocletian, more than 1700 years ago, tried to stop inflation by imposing price controls. He failed. The French Revolutionaries, the same people who executed thousands with the guillotine, used the Law of Maximums to cap food prices. They failed, and the result was widespread famine. The Soviet system used price controls throughout its history. The result, every time, was long lines, shortages and low quality. There are only two interpretations of the Kamala campaign's decision to promise price controls on food. Either 1. They genuinely think that grocery stores, famously one of the lowest-margin, mostly highly-competitive businesses in America, suddenly became "greedier" in 2021 and colluded to hike prices, all at the same time and all in the same way. Or 2. They know "price gouging" has nothing to do with higher food prices, but think they can scam the public by blaming the worst inflation in decades on "greedy corporations." In other words, they either don't grasp basic economics and are incompetent, or they DO grasp basic economics, but are willing to wreck the economy to win political power. Kamala Harris along with Joe Biden created and enflamed inflation, and now they say they can "fix it" by destroying the free market principles which made America the economic powerhouse it is. The Affordable Groceries Act aims to end those food deserts by providing stimulus incentives to new grocery stores and pharmacies, while taxing zombie stores to generate revenue that could be used to fund new stores that sell affordable, fresh food. It works in 3 steps: 1. Streamline new stores, by eliminating conditional use permits for new groceries and pharmacies on vacant lots, while providing tax credits to reduce pharmacy gross receipts taxes. 2. Tax zombie stores, by ensuring that large chain corporations that deliberately leave grocery stores and pharmacies empty pay a vacancy tax for as long as they block competition from using the storefronts. The tax would not apply to small businesses, or to any new store that opens after January 2027. 3. Yesterday I stopped some strangers in the Walmart aisle and asked if these price tags were paper or electronic. “I think they’re paper?” I told them to look closer. I explained how electronic shelf labeling is the first step towards corporations being able to change the price of items in an instant. These are the systems used for dynamic pricing - when corporations change the price for consumers based on shopping behavior and personal data. Technology isn’t the problem. Companies using technology to profit off everyday, working families is. That’s why I wrote House Bill 3959. To ban corporations from using this type of surveillance pricing manipulation. When families are shopping for the same products, on the same shelves, they should be paying the same prices. Instead of prioritizing and protecting working families over corporation profits, Republicans killed this bill in committee. But that just means as Governor I’ll be fighting against corporate greed for everyday people even harder. 🛒

I have a hard time believing that Mamdani has magically figured out how to sell groceries 30% cheaper than every other market in America. The average grocery store only makes about 2 cents of profit on the dollar. Even if they make NO profit, Mamdani's stores still need to cut 28% more off the cost. Sure, they won't have to pay rent or taxes, but they also can't buy in bulk (there's only 5 of them), won't sell high-margin products like hot food or beer, and will probably pay their workers well above the market rate. You can't cut 30% off the price of groceries with that strategy and expect to be profitable. That's just simple math. New Yorkers won't be getting cheaper food. They will just be buying groceries with your tax dollars and calling it a store.
