This is what it sounds like to talk out of both sides of your mouth: “I am the government, and I give you ‘choice’—but only on my terms.” I will take your tax dollars—money meant for public schools that serve all children—and funnel it into private institutions, that can pick and choose who they accept, and the vendors pockets. I will tell you this is about “parental rights,” but I won’t tell you that many of these private schools aren’t required to follow state special education services. I will say I support small government, but I will micromanage public schools with endless regulations, funding cuts, and state-mandated curriculum changes, while letting private schools take public money with little to no accountability. I will tell you that competition makes education better, but I won’t tell you that when public schools lose funding to private schools, they’re left with fewer resources, larger class sizes, and fewer services for the students who need them most. I will promise you “school choice,” but if you live in a rural area where no private schools exist, or if your child has special needs that private schools won’t accommodate, your “choice” is to stay in a defunded, struggling public school. This week as our kids take a deeply flawed STAAR test graded by AI and manipulated by Greg Abbott’s Texas Education Agency Commissioner, let’s remember that upon Greg Abbott’s direction, my amendment to the voucher scam bill to require the same test be given to private school kids who receive vouchers as our kids in public schools take was rejected. As he forces a supersized STAAR test on our kids in public school, Greg Abbott knows that private school parents won’t tolerate the STAAR test. We should not tolerate a governor who wrecks our public schools. It’s time to fire Greg Abbott and end the STAAR test.

James Talarico: My mom didn't get to go to college, but because of Texas public schools, I got to go to the University of Texas. She used to pass the UT Tower and dream about what it was like to go to a school like that. Watching her son graduate right under that same tower—that's the American Dream. That was made possible because of public education, and it's why I fight so hard for our public school teachers and funding.
