Interestingly, as we have AI agents that run in the background, the speed of AI becomes incrementally less important than the core underlying capability level. When you could only give AI small bits of work, then the speed of response mattered a ton. The rate at which you can go back and forth with AI in real-time was the determining factor on how useful it is. But as AI agents can perform more complex and useful tasks in parallel behind the scenes, you can much more easily afford to wait longer for work to get done assuming it’s valuable. Now the focus becomes more on how you review and orchestrate the agents’ work. And the main factor is just how useful and usable is the output that the agent came back with.

AI replacing your job might not be the biggest thing you should be worried about. Because a job was never just a paycheck. For many people, work gives them purpose, structure and a sense that they’re contributing to something. Geoffrey Hinton, the “Godfather of AI,” has warned that even if AI creates enough abundance to support people financially, money alone may not replace what people lose when they stop participating in the economy. But there’s another side to this. As AI replaces more human work, the value of that work doesn’t disappear. It moves somewhere else. And if ownership of AI remains concentrated, much of that value could flow to the companies and billionaires that already own the technology. Ordinary people risk losing both their income and their share of the economic value they helped create. That’s the part we believe is fundamentally unfair. At Action Model, we’re building a different model: a community-owned AI ecosystem where the people helping train, build and improve AI can earn ownership based on the value they contribute. Because if AI is going to create enormous wealth by learning from humans and automating human work...humans should have a stake in the upside.

The problem that Emmett Shear is working on deeply resonates with me: How to align AI and humans together so both see each other as part of their tribe. This doesn't mean aligning AI to human preferences, which is what AI labs seek to do today, by imposing a system of control on AI. You can't control something that is more powerful than you are. What you can do is align yourself with AI, and AI might align itself with you. Tell good stories to AI and show it your care and kindness. Then there's a higher probability that it will see us as part of its tribe. This is a more holistic approach to alignment than anyone else is talking about right now. AI alignment is one of the most fundamental AI research problems. Knowing that people like Emmett are working on it really gives me hope that maybe we have a chance to get Superintelligence right.
