Now that redevelopment is finally underway, the loudest voices are not offering constructive solutions—they are offering conspiracy theories. At #AgendaAajTak, Pranav Adani described a people-first approach that corrects the single biggest failure of past urban projects: residents were asked to trust the process without security. That mistake is now being reversed. Opponents argue that redevelopment will harm residents, yet they remain silent on a basic question: What was the alternative for the last 40 years? Unsafe housing. Open drains Zero civic infrastructure. No toilets. No safe drinking water. Fire hazards Urban justice does not mean freezing people in subhuman conditions in the name of “status quo”. Mumbai is not for sale. Today, at Mulund’s salt pan lands, I raised a fistful of salt in the spirit of a struggle that once challenged an empire. Today, our fight is against a different concentration of power, one that seeks to put Mumbai’s precious land, natural resources and future at the service of Adani’s interests. Dharavi redevelopment cannot become an excuse to sacrifice Mumbai’s ecologically sensitive salt pans. A city that already pays a heavy price every monsoon cannot afford to weaken its natural defences for corporate gain. Dharavikars deserve justice and dignified rehabilitation. Adani does not deserve Mumbai’s land. This is a fight for Dharavi. For Mulund. For our environment. For every Mumbaikar and for the Mumbai we leave to future generations.
