They were added to the agenda of House through a supplementary list🤭 So, anyway, no MP would have gotten a chance to read the loooong bills, so they did away with debate altogether. Very convenient, no? During this, in background there were protests on #SIR, #VoteChori and chants of "Loktantra ki hatya bandh karo" (stop murdering #democracy), "Shame, Shame!" could be heard! But even this wasn't enough! It must come on record that despite widespread protests & repeated demand from Opposition to send #TransgenderBill to a #Parliament Committee, Govt insisted on pushing it through by making unsubstantiated claims! See video👇 First, it's rare that debate on one Bill is stopped to take up another Bill. The debate on #Finance Bill was going on and Transgender Bill was listed AFTER it, but Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asked for the Transgender Bill to be taken up & 'passed' today and for Finance Minister to reply to debate on Finance Bill tomorrow. It is only when a Minister is not available to respond to debate on a Bill, that it is postponed, but Finance Minister is sitting right there! What is the rush to pass #TransBill in #LokSabha today itself? Second, as Rijiju seeks sense of the House, several MPs from the Opposition, in fact, oppose and categorically demand that Bill be sent to a Select Committee to consult with stakeholders from Trans community. They even say that they raised this demand in Business Advisory Committee meeting as well and Rijiju concedes to this. Rijiju himself says that Congress, SP, AITC and NCP(SP) made a request for Bill to be sent to Committee. And then Rijiju makes several unsubstantiated claims: 1. Constitutional Amendment Bill (N0.3) unanimously passes to committee stage The contentious Constitutional Amendment Bill (N0.3) unanimously passed to the committee stage in the National Assembly earlier in the afternoon after the opposition neglected or failed to call for a critical division of the house for MPs opposed to the legislative changes to vote against it. About 30 MPs were opposed to the bill in its entirety after a record-breaking fierce debate. The failure by the opposition to call for division of the house let the bill, which has far-reaching political implications, pass to the committee stage unanimously, without formal opposition. In terms of process, the presiding officer first judges the will of the house using a voice vote ("Ayes" vs. "Nays"). If an MP challenges the presiding officer's ruling, they then can call for a division of the house. Bells are rung to summon all lawmakers to the chamber, the doors are locked, and MPs must physically move to opposite sides of the house (or have their names recorded) to provide an exact, verified tally of votes. A minimum simple majority was required to pass the bill to the committee stage. The committee stage of the bill is the third step in the legislative process. It is a detailed, clause-by-clause examination of the proposals that takes place after the second reading and general debate. During the committee stage, the house resolves into a committee of the whole house rather than meeting as the standard legislative body, allowing for more conversational and repeated speaking opportunities. Members meticulously scrutinise each section or clause of the bill. The committee goes through the bill clause-by-clause sequentially, voting on each clause or block of clauses. A sad day for Australia, as the nation marches further down the road towards a totalitarian society. And never forget tricks used to stifle debate and public discussion. Contrary to precedent, the spirit of the Constitution and Westminster tradition, Labor introduced the Digital ID in the Senate (the House of review) instead of the House of Representatives. Then they guillotined debate in the Senate. And in House of Representatives, Labor shifted debate to the Federation Chamber where the Liberals put up token resistance with only one Liberal MP and two National MP’s bothering to speak on the Bill - and they didn’t even try any amendments to protect privacy or to try and safeguard against it being made compulsory . Thank you for everyone that fought - we won’t give up. If ONE NATION can wun enough seats at thevnext election we will repeal this bill.

#WATCH | Jagtial, Telangana: BRS working president KT Rama Rao says, "Women's Reservation Bill was already passed by the Parliament in 2023. There was no need for this Bill to be linked with the delimitation exercise. Knowing fully well that if 2011's census or latest census becomes the basis for delimitation, southern India will lose out heavily. Modi Govt introduced this Bill, which they knew very well, will not be able to get the 2/3rd majority that is required for a Constitutional amendment. Therefore, we as BRS, certainly express our deep concern and deep protest with respect to stifling the voice of southern India in the Parliament. We request and demand the Union Govt to fulfill the promise given to the women of this country because the Bill was already passed in 2023 with respect to women's reservation. If you have to do it, you can do with the 543 at present. All that we would like to tell you is make sure that the 24% seats that the south of India today has in the Parliament is kept intact. If that is not kept intact, this will lead to severe protest and resentment from the people of south India who have contributed to this nation in a big way..."

It is not funny that MPs are being asked to finish their speech on a Bill within only 1 minute!! Dr. M. Thambidurai was, quite literally, left speechless. #RajyaSabha is debating the Bankers Book Evidence Bill, which was passed within 4 minutes in Lok Sabha last week, without any debate. Today, as RS takes it up, Opposition MPs are not participating (probably they walked out). Earlier when a DMK MP was speaking on the Bill, she was stopped midway and her mic cut off as she tried to raise opposition's demand on other issues. Now, only MPs from NDA parties are participating in debate and even they are asked to wrap up within 1-2 minutes. Law making in #Parliament has become a joke!

There was a lot of pushback from civic groups and from religious minority groups. The government seems to have had consultations with those groups. They haven't tabled the bill. Only when they table the bill will we see whether they have brought about any changes. But if the bill is brought about in the original format, we will stoutly oppose it because it is yet another example of weaponizing the law and bringing institutions and bodies, which are not aligned with the political ideology of the ruling dispensation, under their control. "Early this morning, the United States Senate voted overwhelmingly by a margin of 70-29 to move forward with the bipartisan national security bill. Now it moves to the House, and I urge Speaker Johnson to bring it to the floor immediately. There is no question that if the Senate bill is put to a vote in the House of Representatives, it would pass. So I call on the Speaker to let the full House speak its mind and not allow a minority of the most extreme voices in the House to block this bill from even being voted on." Shouldn't the House vote?
