As temperatures rise, “America is making a concerted effort to make the problem worse as fast as it possibly can,” argues environmentalist Bill McKibben. “We've shut down wind farms that are 90% finished off the Atlantic seaboard, put the federal land off-limits to solar panels, done every possible thing...

I love how McKibben talks…he doesn’t hold back. We are in trouble.

Here's something the cooperative rest of the world can do: impose a heavy carbon penalty on all American goods and services until they start pulling their weight. Their kids will thank us.

America isn’t doing that. The Trump administration and Republicans across the country are making the problem as worse as possible. Many of us are fighting the good fight.

You have a president who wants to corner the market on the world’s oil, and then you are surprised that he is cutting funding for alternative energy sources? He wants the world to bend the knee to his whims.

The fossil fuel industry profits from climate change! The more the planet heats up, the more the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic melts, making resources previously locked up under the ice accessible, driving profits higher. Furthermore: More heat=more energy usage to stay cool!

@CleanAirMoms Younger Americans don’t want to hear about the mid 20th century and people born then. Do they realize this Administration is so focused on their own corruption, that they are taking us back to the 19th century??

Unfortunately, environmentalist Bill McKibben fails to understand the dire political situation that America and the entire democratic world find themselves in after the US presidential election. “We” have not only “shut down wind farms that are 90% complete along the Atlantic coast, banned the installation of solar panels on federal lands, done everything possible to support 18th century energy technologies". “We” are conducting ALL American policy - according to scenarios and in favor of the Kremlin: we are helping the Kremlin gang - to destroy Ukraine, we have started a military provocation in the Middle East, the beneficiary of which is ONLY the Kremlin, we are weakening the NATO - a single collective security system, a guarantee against external aggression,... Because “we” - Donald Trump - a puppet of the Kremlin - the only enemy of America and the entire democratic world, the result of the Kremlin's successful external systemic interference in the US presidential elections since 2014.

@anneapplebaum It’s embarrassing to live in the country that historically contributed the most to CO2 emissions, and then decided to put the pedal down at the worst possible time.

Thanks. More precisely, as global warming starts #ClimateCatastrophe, our Republican Party “is making a concerted effort to make the problem worse as fast as it possibly can” and succeeding. Earlier today:

Nuclear SMRs are 21st century technology...fossil is being phased out. But wind and solar will only ever be about half the answer. Solar is fine for charging your EV or running a home heat pump. It will never provide 24/7/365 power needed by an AI-based economy with demand going vertical. Batteries are not going to keep up. Only SMRs can do that.

If @billmckibben had any real insight into the issue he would be strongly advocating nuclear. But it's prolly hard for him to admit how wrong he was.

I do agree #solar farms don’t belong on public lands or any open land. Put them on top of those massive data centers, malls, parking lots etc etc.

Temperature rise with Summer Season in Northern Hemisphere. Solar panels block photosynthesis. Wind farms take groundwater resources just like Hydroelectric dams.

Would that be the same Mc kibbon who predicted the end of nature in 1989?. I'm sure if he keeps making predictions he'll get one right EVENTUALLY.

David Kipping on why building AI megastructures might be the strongest evidence that we're alone in the universe: The argument starts with something we can already observe: how much energy AI consumes. "One thing we see already with these AI models is how energy hungry they are." P(David|Kipping) ∝ P(Kipping|David) P(David) extrapolates from there. If the only purpose of these data centers is to compute as much as possible as fast as possible, then they'll demand vast amounts of energy. And the orbital data centers that billionaires are getting excited about wouldn't be invisible to us. He explains that such structures would leave a detectable signature: "We should probably see that in James Webb. We could probably already put limits on the existence of essentially artificial rings... emitting a lot of infrared because they're warm." Then comes the unsettling turn. If humanity can build these machines, so could anyone else. And that carries a dark implication. "But if we make that breakthrough, I think the biggest point is it seems to imply that we are alone. Because if we can do it, surely someone else could have done it." This connects to what he refers to as Hart's Fact A. The strange observation that everything we look at in the cosmos appears completely natural: "Everything about the universe: we see stars, galaxies, clouds of plasma. Everything is consistent with nature. There's no hint anywhere of anything artificial, no engineering, nothing in the whole universe. As far as we can see, that's true. That is weird." The more powerful the technology we can imagine, the worse that silence looks. Dyson spheres everywhere, colonising wherever they want, faster-than-light spaceships if any of that is achievable, the sky should be full of evidence. It isn't. "It just massively exacerbates the Fermi paradox to the point where you'd probably conclude this is it." His honest conclusion: "It would make me even more pessimistic about the probabilities of intelligent life in the universe."
