MEGA update: 🥳 IT WORKS: we now have a working dial up internet connection on a virtual Windows 3.11 computer running inside a browser over a virtual modem that talks via Websockets to a PPP daemon! So you can open open the computer, browse the web and even open the page you're on itself again at or chat inside mIRC chat app on or browse gopher:// or whatever you like to do Probably the nerdiest challenge I've ever taken on for the totally arbitrary reason that it seemed completely impossible to do this but we did it (now need to test it more so that it works with 250 parallel users at same time, but the prototype works now, so if you ask why it's not live yet) James Baicoianu, probably one of 2 people in the world who knows how to do this, helped fix my setup and created a virtual dial up internet provider for me that we can dial in to Somehow my mouse doesn't work yet, so I had to do it with the keyboard but here we run Winsock to dial up on a virtual modem that runs then emulates a virtual dial up ISP over Websockets [Next todo] - Fix the mouse - Make the 90mb emulated file smaller - See if it doesn't die with 10 or 50 parallel users - Speed up the Em-Dosbox emulator a bit so it's more usable

🖨️ Got printing working on pieter (dot) com I can now print from Windows 3.11 (in 1994) to my IRL printer (in 2025) It still prints out a lot of PostScript garbage but it works Here's Hacker News live today printed via gopher:// via its dial up modem on pieter (dot) com Next would be cool to have a virtual printer on the site everyone can print to but as always I have no clue how, I guess we need to emulate a LPT1 printer port with WebSockets like we do with the COM1 port for the dial up modem

💬 Here's the demo of PC running Windows 3.11 (from 1993) talking to Apple Computer running MacOS 7.1 (from 1992) both running inside your browser It's crazy how fast the messages arrive, I'd have expected some delay because of the layers it has to go through It goes from a PC/Mac emulator inside WebAssembly in JS sending it via an emulated modem on COM1 port with emulated TCP/IP over WebSockets then routed via a PPP daemon to the real internet and to the reverse engineered America Online server and then back again to the other computer like that But everything happens in literally milliseconds Modern day computing and the internet is truly insanely fast 😊

✨ Asked Cursor to build a Python IRC chat bot that uses gpt4o-mini to talk back on pieter dot com Because most of the time people open the site, the computer loads and then mIRC chat app opens and because they didn't have chat history back then it looks a bit empty So now you have @pieterbot to talk to 24/7, it also has the entire knowledge base so can answer you anything about what you can do do inside Windows 3.11 etc.

🖨️ It took over a year and lots of help from Claude Code but I have now been able to create a real dot matrix printer on the web that prints from Windows 3.11 in your browser: Here's the test page: I couldn't get the LPT1 port to work but COM2 did work (the dial up model already uses COM1), the JS receives the COM2 serial data (just raw print data) and then prints it Next is to make the dot matrix printer better looking (kinda 3d like on pieter dot com) and have the paper also flowing in 3d out of the printer and integrate it on the page My idea was that it might work because we also capture the COM1 data (from the dial up modem) and send it to a Websocket as a dial up connection, so we should be able to capture the COM2 traffic too but I didn't know how, but now I do IT WORKS!! 😊

💾 pieter™'s Windows 3.11 PC is now connected to another retro computer on the web It's Ryo Lu's Ryos X, a MacOS X inspired Web OS where you can listen music, watch videos, play games, browse the web and now chat with people on my retro PC too My dream with this project was to connect it to other retro computers on the web so they can all participate as first class citizens on the internet eventhough they're all old computers running in your browser, and that's happening now 😊 My dreams to see in the browser AND connected to the real internet: - Atari ST (we had one as kids for awhile) - Amiga (never had one, but heard a lot about it) - Apple II (every SF guy has this one at home) - Windows XP (I wanna do it but it's hard cause 32-bit)

Okay I spun it off as a Quake 1 web-based multiplayer game + server you can play now at: 👉 👈 It still works via null modem and you get instantly paired to another player (if there is somebody) and it's just a 16mb download of Quake 1 demo instead of the whole 400mb pieter .com drive If you open the URL both in the same time you probably get paired together and can death match! There is quite some latency because every package goes through my server and Quake 1 did not have client-side prediction yet (which is what Quake World added later), I'l try get QW running to see if it improves it a bit Group multiplayer can come but for that I need to see if I can get actual COM1 modem connection working not just a null modem! Here I'm playing a local LAN death match with Javi Lopez ⛩️ on a game from 1996 in a web browser via a COM1 serial port tunneled via Websockets over the internet! 🤓

🔌Today I created a virtual web-based null modem so now you can finally play Quake 1 (from 1996) in multiplayer in the browser with other people online! This week I was able to create a virtual printer that listens on the COM2 port to make a web-based printer work in Windows 3.11, like on you can actually print to, it was one of my ideas when I started but it was always too difficult to make, I had no idea where to start, but this week AI was able to do it! Today I woke up and thought "if we can listen to COM2 via JS, how about listen to COM1 from Quake 1?" then we could forward the COM1 data via Websockets and to another user to create a virtual null modem (A null modem was a cable you'd use to connect two computers to each other directly in the 90s, if you couldn't afford buying a network card you'd use this to network, but you could only play with one other computer not multiple) So I built it, it took about an hour and works! I wanted to get Quake 1 in DOS to work with multiplayer for 2 years but I could never get it to work, but now it did it This project is a good benchmark of how capable AI is becoming, figuring stuff out that humans would take months within an hour You can try it here, I don't know how it will match lots of people but let's see, you have to exit to DOS first (ALT-F4 or FN-Option-F4 on Mac), then type CD games, then CD quake, then quake, then ESC, then Multiplayer, then either Create New Game or Join Game, and use Direct Connect, keep settings same and you're in!

I do LAN means "local area network" and it was essentially the internet but locally only in your home or company in the late 90s and early 2000s So you could connect to other computers to play games or share files, kinda like Airdrop but via a cable and 30 years ago, people would even meet up at some person's house and bring their entire computer (back then a big PC tower, CRT monitor, keyboard and mouse) and everyone would connect to each other Which is were you'd get all the WaReZ games, MP3 music, etc. cause nobody had internet yet, or if you did it was super slow, so LAN was much faster to transfer files I know Windows 3.11 did have support for LAN networking via NetBEUI and it "should" work, but of course on I don't have a network cable that goes to an Ethernet network hub to other computers But...we could just act like we do? I asked AI to build a virtual Ethernet hub (a hub routes traffic) that acts like a local LAN, but instead of connecting physical computers in a home, it connects other browser sessions on the internet that have running Windows 3.11 open at any time, and with DHCP it can assign an IP to every browser session dynamically, so they literally all become part of a local LAN on the internet! It runs on a virtual NE2000 network card that sends its network data not to a network cable but via Websockets to wss://pieter.com And it works, well kinda, I just started and its' not perfect, but I'm able to PING in MS-DOS from one tab to the other! Next is setting it up inside Windows 3.11!

Small progress today on pieter (dot) com live now: Got a full BIOS working, and it runs the basic MS-DOS commands like EDIT and FORMAT, and added an old CRT screen around it for effect I tried to Format C: my drive and it literally does nuke itself 😂 Also added Jazz Jackrabbit for 🥨 Richard, but the idea is not just old games, we wanna have a real PC running on my site with mIRC and Netscape Navigator being able to open pieter(dot)com within itself! Update on networking: It seems JS-DOS only support IPX networking, which is nice for multiplayer games, but we need TCP/IP networking for it, for now I will try to get: - Netscape working - put the Pieter(dot)com HTML in a file and open that as the start page

Okay I improved the chat a bit on both AIM and IRC, it has more tools now like Search and Thinking so you can actually have deep convos with it now that can query the web, very nice I tried asking it what's going on on Hacker News today and it told me Chat Control 3 and I asked about what it was etc. and what it thought about it, all inside AOL Instant Messenger 😊 Feels really fun to have access to modern LLMs on retro Windows

The Codex app server was such a brilliant stroke of foresight that really doesn't get enough love Not only are you allowed to use your chatgpt account with any harness, but you can build your own apps directly on top of theirs. They just make building on and with codex such a great experience To demonstrate this utility, I want to highlight the kitty litter app, made by SIGKITTEN. Instead of having to build the entire harness, and all the infrastructure, he's plugged into the app server for a unified experience between mobile and dev machine. When I create a session on my computer, it's automatically available on my phone. All of the chats you see in this video automatically populated when we connected to the app server. All my skills. My agents. My sessions. My folders. My prompts. They're all ready to use - automatically. Because they're exposed by the app server, along with many other endpoints. It's a great ux/dx that really deserves some love. It's almost like they want you to build on top of their products ;) Btw Litter is great 👍
