#asktwitter Bringing this scald area back into production, now that ryegrass has created a good plant mulch. Question is, should I torch the rg to kill the seed before the canole comes up, or leave it there to help stop re salinification?

Leave it. Risk of evaporation too great if you remove it.

I know farmers love a good, hot burn to roast out weed seeds but hopefully that lovely organic material can be saved and the canola plants eventually shade out ryegrass seedlings 🤞 (caveat: I have no idea what I’m talking about)

Must be more waterlogging than salinity if ryegrass grows that well!

Yes it is waterlogging, compounded by transient salinity. Ended up bare so I boundaried it off. But our wue has jumped markedly over the last decade so in theory rising salinity should be less now than back then. In theory..

I'd be leaving it. Any areas that we have reclaimed have been every vulnerable to being bare again if a poor germination or waterlogging prevents a good new stubble

I feel that you’ll be back to square one again on a couple of seasons

Leave it , canola struggles in scolded areas as it is

don't burn it ... I think you're pretty keen going canola...I think that soil is going to be pretty hostile at depth... what you really need is plant available calcium, to keep the nola alive

Leave it. Good cover, microbial activity etc has to be a good (better) thing if you can manage it - the "long game"
