Those of us focused on this work understand that some officials don’t want us all voting. They want the people who agree with them voting. I mentioned on rolandsmartin that @syritarsteib, @emilewashington, @wcsnowden and I went to St. James Parish to talk with Black folks about their power. It’s not wrong for Black people to want to see our tax dollars working for our communities. When the lack of Black leadership makes that deficit worse, uplifting Black leadership isn’t racist — it’s survival and wisdom. Right now, people from THIS state are trying to dismantle the Voting Rights Act. To act like race isn’t a factor is a lie. If we want a thriving future, we must use our critical mass, and demand real outcomes in return for our support. We pay into a system — and it should pay back into our communities. We are not hopeless or powerless, we are misinformed, uninformed, or disengaged. All of which can be addressed. When people ask what can we do, start talking to people and asking deeper questions to ensure they understand their power.

The people didn’t ask for a new map. The current plan to gerrymander Missouri’s congressional districts is the GOP’s latest attack on voting rights. This blatant power grab shows just how far they will go to try to suppress votes. In Congress, I fought to expand voting rights and protect our democracy. When I’m back, we’ll hold MAGA Republicans accountable for trying to silence the voices of everyday people. ➡️

And I agree with them, because in a democracy, 51% of the people control 49% of the people. If you're part of the 49%, you're not free. America was founded as a constitutional republic, and in that constitutional republic that we have, 99% of the people can't take away the rights of 1%. You have your rights because you were born with them. You have God given human rights that nobody can take away from you—the government, the majority, no matter who they are. I can't take away your rights. And that's what our founding fathers gave us. But the psychological operations that they do to us, they make us believe that we're a democracy and that majority rules, you see? And they want you to believe that."
