Astra designed a tendon-driven robot hand

This is extremely impressive for two reasons: 1. Robot hands are a difficult and arguably unsolved design challenge in robotics, so Astra is working well out of distribution here 2. Modelling tendons and deformable objects is a very challenging spatial reasoning task

The task took ~48 hours (and 3 usage resets lol) on Astra High It wrote ~50k lines of code to generate 190 STEP files with build123d, animated with javascript, exported to GLB and rendered in a gui.

Would this model work irl? Def not. Is it extremely impressive regardless? Yes.

It's hard to describe how dumb you have to be to think this is how tendons work.

Is that actually tendon driven, or is that astra's best guess of the kinematics here? The actuation mechanics seem way too fast even via gpu to be genuinely driven by real tendon pulleys here.

The useful signal is not that it drew a hand. Surviving 48 hours and 50k lines without turning the repo into soup is where agent demos usually become comedy.
