At this time 12 years ago today, this tornado (upper end EF-4) was moving through Tuscaloosa. Video from John Brown and the late Mike Wilhelm. Understand this was just one of 62 tornadoes in Alabama that day, responsible for 252 fatalities.

12 years ago on this day, my nephew was a 6 yo hiding in a closet w his twin brother and my sister. He starts this fall in atmospheric science at U of AL Huntsville. You’ve saved and inspired more people than you will ever know, Mr. Spann. THank you.

We were working on the new I-22 interchange in Fultondale that day. I told my crew that I had felt the air density like this only one time before, Apr 1974, I packed them up and we got out of there. Good thing we did.

seemed like every thunderstorm had a tornado under it that day. That tornado there originated in Mississippi

What a monster of a storm. In Etowah County, we found debris from a pharmacy in Tuscaloosa.

My elderly parents and our nearby neighbors survived when it hit Pleasant Grove, and I'll forever be grateful.🙏

Unforgettable day. Thanks for all you did. The information broadcast enabled me to call as many friends as possible to take shelter. I got married 3 days later, we sent most of our reception food to rescue crews & survivors. And thanks for mentioning Mike, he is missed.

A coworker's son was in college in Tuscaloosa during this outbreak. She left work to try & reach him. I seem to remember it was late before she was finally able to make contact. It was just back to back tornadoes across the state & it was frightening.

I lived in Pleasant Grove at the time. Makes me sick to think about. We watched the tornado in Tuscaloosa on tv not knowing what we were about to experience 💔
