Trump's statement today that the Iran-U.S. memorandum of understanding is "over" should not come as a surprise. The agreement was never a peace deal. It was a confidence-building arrangement meant to create the conditions for broader nuclear negotiations. Those conditions have largely collapsed. The Israeli war in Lebanon has not ended. Iranian frozen assets apparently remain largely inaccessible. The U.S. has revoked Iran's oil waiver. Threats, explicitly prohibited by the MOU, never ceased. And the Strait of Hormuz has remained fiercely contested. The deeper problem is that neither side believes the other will honor its commitments. From Tehran's perspective, that makes surrendering leverage over the Strait irrational. Hormuz has become the centerpiece of Iran's postwar strategy. "Control" for it does not primarily mean closing the Strait. It means directing commercial traffic through Iranian-designated routes and, over time, establishing a system in which Iran and Oman administer navigation and maritime services while giving Tehran lasting economic and strategic leverage. Iranian officials see this as indispensable because they do not believe that American promises of sanctions relief can provide a durable economic future. Sanctions can be reimposed by the President or the next administration, blocked by Congress, or undermined by the broader political environment. Hormuz cannot. That is the real lesson Tehran believes it has learned from years of negotiations with the United States. Lasting security cannot depend on promises. It must rest on tangible leverage. Hormuz gives Iran something sanctions relief never could: a way to tie its own prosperity, and the costs of coercing it, directly to the prosperity of the Persian Gulf and the global economy. International politics is not Model UN. It is not ultimately sustained by goodwill or unenforceable promises. It is shaped by leverage, incentives, and the ability of states to project power, impose costs and protect their interests. States do not build their long term security on assurances they cannot enforce. That is why the memorandum is falling apart. There is virtually no trust on either side. After decades of sanctions reversals, broken commitments, and now two direct wars, Tehran is not betting its future on American promises. It's betting on tangible leverage that no President, future administration or Congress can simply take away.

I have seen many of my followers on social media asking why Ghana and Nigeria have been vocal about the xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans living in South Africa, while Zimbabwe and Mozambique have remained largely silent. The answer, in my view, lies in politics. For years, the South African government and, in particular, the African National Congress (ANC), have consistently defended ZANUPF in Zimbabwe and FRELIMO in Mozambique. They have defended disputed and rigged elections, stood by those governments during periods of political repression, and maintained close political relationships despite repeated allegations of corruption, human rights abuses and democratic backsliding. A good example is 2008, when then South African President Thabo Mbeki insisted there was “no crisis” in Zimbabwe, despite widespread political violence and hundreds of Zimbabweans being butchered following the disputed election in which Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC had outpolled ZANUPF in the first round. South Africa’s policy of “quiet diplomacy” was widely criticised for shielding the Zimbabwean government from stronger regional pressure. Against that background, it is difficult to expect Harare or Maputo to publicly confront the ANC-led government over the treatment of their citizens in South Africa. The political relationships between those governing parties are deep and longstanding. Criticising Pretoria would inevitably strain alliances that have existed for decades and bring to the fore the root causes of illegal immigration in South Africa. Ghana and Nigeria occupy a different political position. They do not depend on the ANC for political legitimacy or regional backing in the same way. Both countries have experienced regular transfers of power through competitive elections, and neither government relies on South Africa to validate its democratic credentials. As a result, Accra and Abuja have greater political space to speak out when they believe their citizens are being mistreated abroad. That difference helps explain why the strongest official reactions have come from Ghana and Nigeria, while Harare and Maputo have been far more restrained. There is also another important reality. The overwhelming majority of migrants from elsewhere in Africa living in South Africa come from neighbouring countries, particularly Zimbabwe and Mozambique. That geographical reality means those two countries are central to any discussion about migration into South Africa. Their governments know this, which makes their diplomatic position even more complicated. As I have argued before, South Africa’s immigration challenges are genuine and deserve serious policy solutions. However, genuine domestic problems can also be exploited by external actors seeking to deepen divisions or damage South Africa’s international standing as Israel is now doing. Recognising that possibility does not mean denying that the underlying challenges are real. It means understanding that geopolitical actors often exploit existing fault lines rather than creating them from scratch. Whether one agrees with my analysis or not, I hope this explains why the official responses from Accra and Abuja have been much louder than those from Harare and Maputo. Back home in Southern Africa, Botswana has also been very vocal against xenophobia and Afrophobia. Its President has publicly condemned attacks on African nationals living in South Africa. The ruling party in Botswana even invited South African opposition leader Julius Malema, who has consistently spoken out against Afrophobia and the targeting of fellow Africans, to address its annual conference this past week. Botswana is able to do this because it is a functioning democracy. Unlike Zimbabwe and Mozambique, it has never depended on South Africa or the African National Congress (ANC) for political backing after disputed or rigged elections, allegations of electoral manipulation or the repression of its own citizens. It therefore has far greater diplomatic freedom to criticise South Africa when it believes fellow Africans are being mistreated. That is why Botswana, like Ghana and Nigeria, has been prepared to speak out against what it perceives as black-on-black violence directed at African migrants. By contrast, the governments in Harare and Maputo have remained largely silent, reflecting the long-standing political relationships between their ruling parties and the ANC, which publicly backs rigged elections. None of this requires a rocket scientist to understand. It simply requires an appreciation of how regional politics, diplomatic alliances and political interests shape the public positions that governments take. Those who are prepared to look beyond the headlines and understand the underlying dynamics will appreciate the point. Those who focus only on the symptoms, while ignoring the political relationships and incentives that produce them, will continue to wander aimlessly through the political wilderness.

The World Can Have Peace Or Israel, But Not Both Israel is already aggressively sabotaging the Trump administration’s two-week ceasefire with Iran by slaughtering huge numbers of civilians in Lebanon, a nation which is explicitly off-limits for any attack under the ceasefire conditions agreed to by Tehran. The US and Israel are trying to claim that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire agreement, but Pakistan, whom the US appointed to mediate the agreement, says this is false. The New York Times reports that the White House took part in Pakistan’s public messaging which explicitly included Lebanon in the ceasefire conditions, before changing its tune after Israel attacked. Iran has reportedly responded to these violations by again halting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This serves as yet another reminder that the world can have peace or it can have Israel — but it cannot have both. Israel is a genocidal apartheid state whose entire existence is premised upon a strategy of unceasing violence and abuse in the middle east. As long as that state continues to exist in its present iteration, peace will never be attainable. ❖ If your job hired a guy who kept getting into fights with your coworkers and saying it’s because they are racist against him, for a week you might believe him. After a month, you’d have doubts. After two months, you’d realize he’s probably just an asshole. Israel has been doing this for eighty years. ❖ Democrats in the House and Senate are finally moving on a War Powers Act to stop the US president from going to war with Iran, and I’d say better late than never but at this point that would barely even be true. Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Chris Murphy are currently slamming the president not for his horrifying mass atrocities in Iran but for losing the Strait of Hormuz and failing to achieve objectives like completely disarming their conventional missile program. As I have said here previously, it’s clear that the reason the Democratic Party failed to oppose Trump’s warmongering with Iran was because they supported it too. The actual, official 2024 Democratic Party platform accused Trump of “fecklessness and weakness” for failing to go to war with Iran during his first term. Kamala Harris labeled Iran the #1 enemy of the United States. In their 2024 debate, Harris repeatedly slammed Trump for being too soft on America’s enemies and announced that she “will always give Israel the ability to defend itself, in particular as it relates to Iran and any threat that Iran and its proxies pose to Israel.” I’ve seen a lot of people trying to argue that Trump’s depravity in Iran proves everyone should support Democrats, but it’s clear the Democratic Party is just the more polite-looking face on the same evil power structure. ❖ The Grayzone’s Wyatt Reed has an article out about a freakish BBC article which cited an anonymous Iranian who allegedly told them he supports the US and Israel “hitting energy infrastructure, using an atomic bomb, or leveling Iran.” Following public outcry, the quote was removed and replaced with completely different words — initially without any editor’s note of any kind. Reed documents how the BBC reporter behind the story, Ghoncheh Habibiazad, is a London-based Iranian monarchist with an extensive history of agitating for regime change war against her home country, including with the US government propaganda operation Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Last month The Times ran an article titled “Some Iranians say one thing’s worse than bombs: no bombs”. Western powers are always aggressively pushing this self-evidently false claim that people in empire-targeted countries want bombs dropped on them, in much the same way slavery proponents argued that Africans were happiest as slaves because God made it their nature to serve. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: it’s impossible to have enough disdain for the western press.

From freezing weapons for Ukraine while they were literally under fire, to rolling out the red carpet in Alaska for a dictator, the pattern is so consistent it’s borderline predictable. As Whitehouse points out, quoting the late John McCain, Russia is essentially a 'gas station run by gangsters.' So why is the 'most powerful man in the world' acting like he’s the one working the night shift at the Russian pump? Here is Senator Sheldon Whitehouse walking through Trump’s pro‑Kremlin moves. “Here's a sampling of what Trump has done for Russia just lately and usually at the expense of American interests. There are many, but here's a top ten. One. After Trump and Vice President Vance theatrically chastised the heroic Ukrainian President Zelensky in front of TV cameras in the Oval Office last year, Trump paused our weapons shipments to Ukraine. The Empire Backs Down, For Now Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran after previously threatening to exterminate their “entire civilization”, citing “a 10 point proposal from Iran” as the reason for the climb-down. US has accepted Iran’s control over Strait of Hormuz, enrichment right, removal of all sanctions.” The New York Times reports the following: “Two senior Iranian officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations, said the proposal included a guarantee that Iran would not be attacked again, an end to Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and the lifting of all sanctions. “In return, Iran would lift its de facto blockade of the key shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran would also impose a fee of roughly $2 million per ship that it would split with Oman, which sits across the strait. Iran would use its share of the proceeds to reconstruct infrastructure destroyed by American and Israeli attacks, rather than demand direct compensation, according to the plan.” So as things stand right now this certainly looks like a humiliating defeat for the empire. History is made: Fine structure mystery solved? /🧵 UPDATE: My model may have solved an outstanding question in physics: the origin of the fine structure constant. I found a robust source and it works even with some tuning within -3% to 7% over a massive range of non-linear fields. What is the fine structure constant? Watch the video below and you'll find out. Essentially its a mysterious constant that occurs in atomic and subatomic physics that has no unit. Countless people have tried to find a reason for it, and most have turned to numerology. I did something that only could work in this age of LLMs and someone who is a motivated expert in the field. Did a massive paper search, found the material in 10 minutes, aligned everything, then had it double check for me. Note that I wasn't looking for it. It occurred to me by accident when I was developing my bilinear principle of electromagnetic interaction. Within an hour, I had a value for it. My idea was simple: apply my non-linear soliton model to the electron in a way that makes my current x current interaction make sense not just at the atomic level but the subatomic level. Look at E = mc^2. It's the same as E = (sqrt(m) c)(sqrt(m) c). If sqrt(m) could be scaled to a charge, then you could interpret it as two scaled currents multiplying against each other. This is almost identical to the equation for the energy contained within an inductor L with a current I running through it: E = 0.5 L I^2. So far, sketchy right? Here's the thing, vortexes are solitons and they can exist in superfluids -- they even have quantised "Noether charge". They acquire a mass from their vorticity, have an energy associated with them and can move at any speed inside the medium with a different speed. Exactly like electrons! So my idea was to map the electron exactly to these vortices. If I could predict the mass of the electron, I could actually finally connect mass to electromagentism properly (Planck's argument is elegant but indirect). I used dimensional analysis to do this. It took a few tries to get it right and I had it checked by 10 different instances of the highest powered LLMs. With this first order approximation I got within 1/4th of the mass. It was almost exactly 1/4th... so I realised, I had to use a double cover to make it like SU(2). After another half an hour of research, I felt confident in using something like Dirac's scissor to do it. A kind of knot within the electron. It got me within 1.2% of the mass of the electron... but there was a problem, the mass of the electron occurred on the other side of the equation. I cringed at myself. Such an amateur mistake, I thought. But the LLM (Opus 4.5) actually corrected me and told me I had just accidentally derived the fine structure constant. Why? Because the mass terms cancelled out, or if one prefers, leave behind a correction ratio. Set that correction ratio and you get a function that implicitly defines the fine structure constant through two "parameters": 1. The actual geometry of the soliton/vortex. 2. The non-linearity of the medium and how it changed the vortex core. I went back and found an equation from friggin' Lord Kelvin, derived in the Victorian era. I then found an analysis from 1970 on the Non-linear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE) applied to exactly this domain but for a larger scale soliton in superfluids -- it didn't matter though because a superfluid and the medium of space are scale free as I had proven in the superconduction part of my paper. In any case plugging these two approximation in got me within 1.2% of the fine structure constant by solving the following implicit equation: 1 = 8 * pi * alpha (Log_e(8/alpha) - alpha_core) Where alpha_core is 1.615 in the NLSE. The most incredible thing? It was a ROBUST value for thin ring vortices. Even if you adjusted the alpha_core from 1.5-2, the values for the fine structure constant only changed between -3% to +7%. I cannot emphasise how incredible this result is -- it means that the actual non-linear equation and the other candidate geometries that reproduce SU(2) can actually get the exact value of the fine structure constant. I don't know of anyone who even approached this problem in this way without making ansatz or postulates. I'm still checking through the math in disbelief. If it's wrong it's going to be beautifully wrong. All LLMs I've ran it through agree with the math, just not the foundations which is expected due to their QED bias. This will be in chapter 11 of my paper. I've already sketched out the full derivation. This SIGNIFICANTLY strengthens an already game changing paper. I promise it'll be the last discovery I include and thank you for your patience. I wrote this full update out because of the significance of this development. Hard Hats for Soft Hearts For the last several years, I’ve been on a bit of a philanthropic kick. Rick Steves' Europe takes more than 30,000 people on guided tours of Europe every year, and with no stockholders in the company (other than me), I make lots of money. I’ve long passed the point where consuming more makes me happier — and rather than finding non-productive ways to blow this money on myself, I’ve become an entrepreneurial small-time philanthropist who delights in what I like to call “vicarious consumption.” (Yes, getting joy out of other people consuming my extra money.) In a society as affluent as ours with so many seniors, youth, and struggling people who can’t find or afford help, I like to “consume” by investing in things that make my community stronger, more stable, and healthier — it’s my way of “being wealthy”…and I consider this a political act. My travels in Europe have taught me that a truly great society collectively helps each other through progressive taxation and a caring government. But, with our current president, that just isn’t the way things work in the US. (I’ll be getting an obscene tax cut thanks to our president’s loyalty to the 1% at the expense of the 99%…just wait to see how — as a political statement against such regressive taxation — I’ll be “taxing myself” at an appropriate level…and putting it to good use.) About 25 years ago, I purchased some land adjacent to my church, and I was determined to find a smart way for us to put it to good use. Since then, I’ve given that land to my church, and we’ve partnered with Volunteers of America Western Washington to build a vibrant new hub of multigenerational and multicultural services that will serve thousands of people in our region — all powered by $5 million in seed money from me to help make it happen. And now, thanks to caring citizens, forward-thinking civic leaders, and generous grants from local foundations, corporations, and government programs, this $25M project is 95% paid for, and a 40,000-square-foot, LEED Gold Certified building is nearly built. This November, the Lynnwood Neighborhood Center will open its doors. Inside, our neighbors will find preschool classrooms, a Boys and Girls Club, a teen room, a multipurpose gym, adult day care for seniors with memory issues, medical and dental clinics, a behavioral health center, a teaching kitchen and café, housing and employment support, a tech center, low-cost meeting and event spaces for struggling nonprofits, and a multigenerational “piazza” where we can all come together as a community. “Vicarious consumption?” Yes, what a fun, gratifying — and these days, almost subversive — way to be wealthy. I’m so happy to help create this community hub, which is destined to give our community’s love traction long after those of us who built it are gone. While I may be the public face of this project, it couldn’t have happened without my 100 mission-driven colleagues at Rick Steves’ Europe — and travelers like you who enjoy our tours and guidebooks. Richard Czuba, founder of the Glengariff Group, is the pollster for both The News and WDIV. They quote him in print. They interview him on TV. The governor’s race is too close to call! Mike Duggan is a kingmaker in the U.S. Senate race! The governor's race is deadlocked! What the paper hasn’t told you is that Czuba is the subject of a criminal referral—drafted by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, no less—accused of raising and laundering more than $750,000 into the campaign coffers of a 2020 gay rights campaign co-chaired by Alanna Maguire. It is no small detail that Maguire is the wife of Attorney General Dana Nessel, a hyper-partisan Democrat. For her part, Nessel stands accused by the Michigan House Oversight Committee of tanking that investigation into Czuba and her own wife. Nessel herself will soon face impeachment charges by the House of Representatives. To this day, the paper’s political writers have not disclosed the incestuous affair to the public. Czuba, it is alleged, was the paid middle-man who collected dark money from DTE’s political arm and funneled it to Maguire’s campaign. Instead of divulging his name, the paper uses the name of Czuba’s now-defunct advocacy organization, Bipartisan Solutions. Would somebody please explain to me what is “bipartisan” about a pollster raising money for some of the most powerful and most connected Democrats in the state? Meanwhile, The News has spilled barrels of ink on a similar story. A conservative group, Unlock Michigan, pushed a ballot initiative back in 2020 looking to repeal Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency Covid powers. People involved with raising money for that initiative were criminally referred by Benson to Nessel, accused of laundering dark money in order to conceal donor identities. Nessel brought criminal charges on that one, which carry up to 14 years in prison and potentially millions of dollars in fines. That case is ongoing, and The News can’t get enough of it. But the case of the Attorney General, her wife and their “non-partisan” pollster? Crickets. I don’t know. Sounds like a story to me. But there’s another question: Is Czuba is even good at polling? I called him to ask. Again, crickets. But there is this: The News published a Glengariff poll just a week before the 2024 election. Czuba had Kamala Harris beating Donald Trump by 3% (Trump, in fact, beat Harris by 1.4%). In the Michigan senate race, Czuba had Elissa Slotkin beating Mike Rogers by 4.5% (Slotkin beat Rogers by 0.3%). Both results were outside the poll’s margin of error. Did Czuba’s poll sway voter turnout? Not likely, since almost no one reads The News. Still, it’s farcical when you know what’s going on under the sheets. This is Chris Konawel talking about how bad things are getting in Gloucester County with the folks running unchecked Here is his statement from FB: "I have decided to file a lawsuit against Gloucester County and the Board of Commissioners for allegedly violating my rights as your elected official. For too long, Gloucester County has run unchecked and has done whatever it wants to residents, employees, and even elected officials. After the events of the January 2nd, 2026 Reorganization Meeting — where I, as a duly elected County Commissioner, was precluded from doing my job and not allowed to ask questions on the resolutions in front of me — enough is enough. Let’s start with this: The County decided its elected officials didn’t deserve to receive information on what we were voting on until just hours before the meeting. We’re talking millions of dollars in contracts, dozens of appointments that affect every resident in this county, and the hiring of a new County Administrator. An administrator making more than any Governor in the country — more than the VICE PRESIDENT of the United States. And we were told we couldn’t ask questions. Several members of the public came to speak and were told they could not. Public comment was avoided. The unelected County Counsel rammed the meeting through — and by the way, his own contract had expired and was on that very agenda. It is my job as your elected official to ask questions that will affect this county for years. My job is not to sit idly by and allow things to be shoved through to the detriment of the people I represent. Because of this, I filed a lawsuit alleging violations of the Open Public Meetings Act. I am doing this pro se — on my own. With no college degree or experience. I had attorneys willing to take the case, but I felt the County shouldn’t be charged thousands more because of this nonsense. I am not seeking monetary relief. I’m not even asking for my $350 filing fee back. I’m doing this because residents deserve better. Think about this: In the five years I’ve been on this board, there has not been a single “no” vote by anyone other than myself and Commissioner Nick DeSilvio. No debate. No discussion. Just rubber stamping. Those of you who are married — and love your spouse — ask yourself this: Have you gone five years without a single disagreement? How can five elected officials not have one disagreement in five years? We all know the answer — and it’s not good. And instead of defending his own actions, the County Counsel — who makes well into six figures — could not defend himself against me, a high school graduate with no legal training. So the County hired one of the most expensive political attorneys in the state to justify what happened. Think about that. That’s like trying to kill a fly with a shotgun — but I guess it’s easy when it’s not your money. All I’m asking the Court to do is declare the meeting improper and order that it be conducted properly — with questions and public comment — because residents deserve transparency. Court is this Friday, February 13th I ask all of you: share this. Let residents know what is happening behind the scenes. Let’s take our government back to the people — where it belongs.
