one reason why zhao lusi's drama characters can consistently evoke empathy from audiences is that she herself approaches every role with deep empathy. she perceives all characters as inherently multifaceted rather than morally fixed, allowing her to inhabit their contradictions & vulnerabilities. "from a female perspective, all female characters can make people empathise, whether she is a 'good' or 'bad' character. because I think human nature has two sides and nobody is absolutely good nor absolutely evil. (...) on hindsight, I realised that I've never truly come out of a role. these characters have taught me a lot and they have truly become integrated into my being"
