BREAKING: Trump Trade advisor, Peter Navarro, ridiculously claims that Auto tariffs will raise $100 billion and other tariffs will raise $600 billion a year. This is such a gaslighting attempt to mislead. No, they will NOT raise this much money. Not even close In 2024, the U.S. brought in about 8 million cars from other countries, worth around $200 billion. If we taxed those cars at 25%, and that does not cause imports to fall (which it would), that would only bring in $50 billion, not $100 billion. And even if we did raise the tariff that high, it might backfire. When things get more expensive, people usually buy less. So if imported cars get too pricey, people might stop buying them—and that means we’d collect less in taxes, not more. An his other ridiculous claim that tariffs on all imports would bring in $600 billion, again, that doesn’t hold up. In 2024, the U.S. imported about $3.1 trillion worth of stuff from other countries. To get $600 billion in tariff revenue, we’d need to tax everything we import at an average rate of 20%—and pretend that people would keep buying the same amount of imported goods, even at higher prices. That’s just not realistic. To give you some context, during Trump’s first term, he put tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese goods. Those tariffs were as high as 25%, but over several years they only brought in about $70 billion total—not per year. That’s because when you raise prices, businesses and consumers often change their behavior. They might buy from somewhere else, or not buy at all. So the actual money the government collects is a lot lower than it looks on paper. So, bottom line: the numbers Navarro and others are throwing around sound impressive, but they don’t really match how the economy works in real life.

Chamath: Frontier AI Leaders “Created a Total F*cking Mess” Short-sighted fearmongering and immaturity from frontier AI leaders has created deep mistrust, threatening AI’s potential as an open engine of economic mobility. That mistrust gives hyperscalers the chance to position themselves as trusted gatekeepers, using KYC, audit trails, and compliance infrastructure to turn AI into an oligopoly. Chamath Palihapitiya on the All-In Pod: “I think the leaders of the frontier labs leave a lot to be desired. I think what we're seeing is a consistent pattern of evasiveness and immaturity, and I think that does a huge disservice to the entire movement of AI. The key to a vibrant life is rooted in economic mobility, and I think AI is the grand leveler. It is the thing that can enable everyone to have unique amounts of economic mobility because they are unencumbered to figure out what their upper bound is. And against that backdrop, we have to live in this constant doomerism, hype cycle, naivety, and I think it holds us back. How does it hold us back? Tactically, number one, it creates mistrust. I think that Silicon Valley was already decaying in the prestige that it held in American society. We built important things. Then we veered away from that, and we started building less important things. And now we're at a point where we've potentially started to rebuild important things again, but we have this veneer of negativity and mistrust that are created in large part because we just cannot get our sh*t together. And the leaders of the frontier labs are public enemy number one. Number two, I think what it creates, which I think is bad, but what it creates is an incredible opportunity for the hyperscalers. And the very simple opportunity is to convince governments all around the world, not just America, that they should be the gatekeeper. A: You can't trust these guys. B: These models are all over the place. C: Let us be the ones that provision them to the world. We will wrap it in KYC. I've been now talking about KYC for a while, right? Who are these customers? Do they have identification? Why are they allowed to run these models? What are they prompting? Let's keep them so that there's an audit trail. All of these things are going to become issues. The Frontier Lab folks made it an issue because of how they've handled all of this up until now. And what does that create? Now that creates an oligopoly for AI, the most powerful economically leveling instrument we've ever seen in the hands of maybe a handful of hyperscalers, who by the way, would make an incredibly compelling argument, and they would be right. And the only counterfactual to it would be, ‘Well, trust us, guys, it should actually be much more open and in a far more distributed environment.’ Can you imagine the cost and the complexity if you ask the neoscaler to build the same robust KYC or the same VPC infrastructure that Amazon and Microsoft and Google have spent decades investing trillions of dollars in? It's an impossibility, Jason. So you can take all of those datacenters off the map. You can take all of the neoscaler market off the map. All of this was preventable. So instead of a diverse, robust, open ecosystem giving a tool that is the fundamental unlock for humans, we are now going to debate gatekeeping and duopoly versus oligopoly. They have created a total f*cking mess, and it's a shame.”

Of course, there is a long string of numbers behind it. How long is it? Infinitely long. π is an irrational number. I’ve been called “wog” before. It nearly destroyed my life. I have no idea how I coped. It stopped me from starting a family, building a business and buying a home. It stopped me from being involved in Australian politics and even impeded my ability to sue a sitting Prime Minister from the executive of a major political party. It was debilitating… ahhhh, no. In truth, Australia is one of the most welcoming and fair-minded places in the world. When my grandparents migrated here from southern Europe some more than 100 years ago, they assimilated. They wanted to be Australian, their kids wanted to be Australian. After all that’s why they came. I was brought up Australian. We spoke English at home, and had friends of all backgrounds. But the one thing we had in common was our shared love for this country and a common Australian culture. I started growing up here before Paul Keating talked about multiculturalism. I don’t understand why people would leave their homelands and not want to be a real and full part of the Australian experience. If people want to keep their culture intact, and raise their children as something other than fully Australian, why come here at all? Some might say that there are cultures that are totally incompatible with our Western system, and I am not prosecuting that case, but if immigration (which has always been a part of the Australian story) is going to work and serve Australia, then surely people must be prepared to accept a new way of life upon arrival. It’s not as if the country has not afforded everyone great opportunities in the past - before the new post Covid era today, where there seems to be a total lack of opportunity for anyone. I always find it disturbing to hear politicians and talking heads in the media call Australia a racist nation - calling Australians racist. Many of these speakers are themselves recent immigrants. They sit in the Australian parliament and are paid by the Australian taxpayer, or they work for the ABC among other senior private and public sector positions. Many have much better lives and opportunities than people who have been here for hundreds of years, and even tens of thousands of years. They are privileged to have a voice, and instead of using that voice to thank the people of this country for the opportunities afforded to them, they slander us all. Call us names and try to shame us. Many of us gave up the cultures of our heritage to be a part of the Australian story and that is the only way we will have anything like social cohesion moving forward. Gratitude goes a long way, especially when one considers the fact that most immigration has been an imposition. There has rarely been a national conversation, or even any airtime given to those who would want to insist on a reduction or ending of the immigration programme. More, it is a sin to suggest that multiculturalism has failed. Forget the loss of trust and rights (like speech) that have been the absolute consequence of a system so obviously under pressure. I don’t care where you come from, what you believe, or who you think you are, if you don’t think you get a fair go here – you could always go back to wherever it is you come from. I’m sure it is the same advice I would be given if I were to go to whatever country that is and whinge about just about anything. The reason people stay is, even with the terrible political situation, it is still the best country in the world to live and raise a family and there are opportunities for anyone who wants to have a go. We must restore trust, and that starts with frank and honest conversations – even if they are unpleasant or inconvenient. I just want Australia back.

ALAN BATES, OUR HERO Imagine spending 20 years trying to prove you are not a thief. Now imagine winning. Now imagine the same people who called you a thief for two decades hand you a piece of paper that says take this money or get nothing at all. That is basically what just happened to Sir Alan Bates. Quick recap for anyone who missed the ITV drama or somehow avoided this story for the last ten years. The Post Office used a computer system called Horizon. It was built by Fujitsu UK. It was buggy. Really buggy. So buggy it invented money problems that did not exist. Post office workers would check their accounts and suddenly there was a shortfall of a few thousand pounds nobody could explain. Instead of checking the software, the Post Office decided the simpler explanation was that thousands of small shop owners across the country had all quietly turned into criminals at the same time. Over 700 people were prosecuted. People lost their homes. People lost their marriages. People went to prison for crimes a computer made up. Some people died before anyone in charge admitted the truth. This went on from 1999 to 2015. Sixteen years. Nobody at the top said sorry in any meaningful way. Nobody at the top lost their job over it either. Alan Bates was one of these subpostmasters. He got sacked in 2003 after Horizon claimed he had a shortfall. Instead of quietly disappearing, which is probably what the Post Office was hoping for, he went and found other victims. He built a group called the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance. For years he organised hundreds of ordinary shopkeepers who had zero legal power against a state owned company with unlimited lawyers and unlimited patience for delay. In 2019 they won. High Court ruling. Official confirmation that Horizon was broken and these people were never thieves. 555 claimants won a settlement of 57.75 million pounds. Sounds like a lot of money until you remember lawyers exist. After legal fees ate through it, the group had almost nothing left to actually live on. Justice, minus the overhead. Then the ITV drama airs. The whole country suddenly pays attention. Every politician who ignored this scandal for over a decade now wants a photo standing next to Alan Bates.
