Augusta National is cracking down on slow play 👀

@alan_bastable They’re just fiddling at the margins. If they were serious they’d change the Rules: 1) No caddy allowed within 30y of any green. 2) Ball may be lifted or touched only once per green. 3) No straddling the intended line of a putt.

@alan_bastable pace of play has to be resolved as whole from majors to tours to local courses. it’s a quiet killer in the industry imo

@alan_bastable Blame the coaches & amateur game organisers, they could stamp it out at junior or college level but I can only assume they are accepting it

@alan_bastable It is quite simple ...if it is a players turn to take their shot ..they have 90 seconds to take the shot ..if they go over the 90 seconds ..it's a 1 stroke penalty ... I think a minute is too short so 90 is a happy medium .. Players will soon pick up the pace

@alan_bastable give players 9 slow play cards. You can only use them once, because sometimes you have to slow down and think when you’re in a Tough spot. Trying to satisfy both sides.

The debate about AimPoint (and all that goes with it) isn’t the real issue. You could easily get rid of AimPoint with a simple rule that states: “No straddling the intended line of a putt is allowed” … but that won’t stop slow play — on the greens or in any other area. Slow players gain an advantage (& are given an advantage) when timing isn’t enforced. They don’t have to act until absolutely ready — & NO other high-level sport allows competition pressure to be ignored &/or dealt with in that way. Hell, even chess has a clock. It’s far past time to figure out an agreed upon & foundational way to enforce timing in high-level golf competitions. It may not be a shot clock on every hole, but it should begin with the real-time enforcement of some sort of a shot-by-shot timing system on all competitors in the competition. It has to occur at the highest levels & then can be modeled down to all levels of golf.
