Robots moving railcars! 🚃 Did you know that KUKA is also in the mobile robots business? Yes, you heard that right. And not just any robots. Robots that carry up to 56 tons! 🏋🏼 The railcar production process is highly complex, particularly when moving massive cars sideways within a plant. This challenge has been addressed at the Siemens facility in Germany using the OmniMove system from KUKA. The system allows for precise positioning, enabling the units to lift, move, and lower railcars with remarkable accuracy. With Mecanum wheels, the OmniMove units can move seamlessly in any direction, making the process incredibly efficient. Together, these units are capable of lifting up to 56 tons, streamlining heavy railcar production. China has put the "Tianshan" gas carrier, with a capacity of 174,000 m3, into operation - another miracle of the shipbuilding industry The new gas carrier for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), "Tianshan", was officially put into operation in Shanghai on January 30, 2026, almost two months earlier than scheduled. The company said the latest software update to its driverless hardware suite will enable its trucks to drive nonstop from Phoenix to Fort Worth. That trip is roughly 1,000 miles long and takes 15 hours to complete. By contrast, a human driver would legally have to take a 30 minute break after 11 hours of driving. Brembo’s Sensify Braking System is now in series production on vehicles from a major undisclosed global automaker. Sensify is a software controlled, fluid-free brake-by-wire system developed by Brembo. It uses no brake fluid. Instead, it uses electric actuators at each wheel, AI-driven software, and a pedal simulator to deliver customizable and precise braking without hydraulic fluid or a traditional master cylinder. Each wheel has its own motor that squeezes the pads onto the rotors (with redundant windings for safety). Advantages of Sensify: • Independent electric braking at each wheel with AI for shorter stops and maximum grip. • Seamless integration with ADAS and autonomous driving systems. • Eliminates brake fluid, removing maintenance, leaks, and environmental issues. • Zero brake drag via full pad retraction, improving EV range and reduced wear. • Fully customizable pedal feel and response through software for any driving mode. • Faster than hydraulic ABS with better stability in low-grip scenarios. Simulation-first approach to robotic production lines! 👾 At Hannover Messe, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SoftServe are demonstrating a fully autonomous, AI-powered manufacturing workflow. Design a product using generative AI, then watch it move through the entire process: engraving, inspection, and delivery, handled by a mix of robots working together powered by physical AI on AWS. The interesting part is how the system is built. Getting robots into production is usually where things fall apart. SoftServe takes a simulation-first approach using AWS. They build and test the entire system virtually: robot behavior, production flow, before deploying anything physically. This enables faster iteration, safe edge case testing, and significantly reduced sim-to-real gap. Their demo includes AMRs handling transport, cobots doing precise manipulation, AI-driven quality inspection, and humanoid interaction at the end. "Farm murders are a very serious problem in South Africa. The response to that is to say, 'Well, there are many problems in South Africa, so why are you pointing to this one?' But the fact of the matter is that it's a very unique problem, and it's a problem that could only be prevented or combated by a unique counter strategy. And there are a few things that make the farm murders unique. One is the extreme frequency at which it's happening - just the sheer numbers - thousands of people having been murdered on farms, many of them tortured. In many of those cases, nothing is stolen. They just come in, they torture the farmers for several hours, and then they leave. …The second is the brutality, the high levels of torture that we see. And any torture method you can imagine has been employed in these farm attacks. And it's the most grotesque torture you could think of in many of these cases. …The third is the unique economic impact, because farmers are skilled people, they are employers, they provide food for the country. So, it would have disastrous consequences for the nation at large, and it already has. The fourth is just the fact that farmers live in unique circumstances. They live far away from police stations, far away from their neighbors, oftentimes on dirt roads. Oftentimes there’s bad cell phone signals. So, that alone says that you need a unique counter strategy to fix this, even though the South African government doesn't want to recognize this. Magnetic levitation for surgical robots! 🧲 A research team working on minimally invasive surgery just introduced a remote magnetic levitation to move things inside our bodies. Their main goal is to control guidewires and catheters inside the body using magnetic fields. But levitation is unstable and extreme, it forces them to solve fundamental control problems they can't avoid. They have to handle strong magnetic field nonlinearities, develop real-time invertible models, and create control methods that work on any eMNS (electroMagnetic Navigation System) and any object. The real challenge is the position and orientation feedback. You can control a magnet outside the body, but once a catheter or drug-delivery robot is inside a patient, you can't see it. There's no vision, but just magnetic fields and current measurements. That's huge news coming out of ETH Zurich!
