A versatile robot helping out airports! 🛩️ Meet a two-wheeled robot from Fraunhofer IML! 🦿 This balancing robot with gripping arms successfully completed its initial practical tests at the cargo terminal of Munich Airport a while ago. It transported goods, supported loading and unloading, and assisted with physically demanding logistics tasks. This robot can carry loads of up to 100 kg and reach speeds of around 60 km/h. That’s far beyond what most AMRs can handle, yet it still has arms and a form of mobility that lets it work in spaces designed for people. P.S. This robot is playing Tetris! 🧊 AGILOX dropped something exciting at LogiMAT. One of the most requested robot use cases finally automated: Manual truck loading. What I'm really impressed of is the high precision positioning of pallets directly next to the truck or container wall. The robot is used to inspect the walls of ships. 🚢 The Magnet Crawler introduced by the University of Bremen is a lightweight and compact climbing robot for magnetic surfaces. The robot has two magnetic wheels driven by geared motors and an elastic tail to improve stability. In the front part of the robot, there is a miniature wireless camera. The robot is remotely teleoperated & the video signal from the camera is displayed to the operator on a portable screen. Let's wait and perhaps the robot will become more autonomous over time. Robotics and CV! 👓 Computer vision gives the robots a sense of vision and additional intelligence. Pralines are packed by a delta robot using computer vision. Packing chocolate pralines into a box with the delta robot. Unlike most robots, this one has a fixed TCP, and the base moves in response to vision data. To adjust the base, the vision system determines exactly where the praline is located on the conveyor belt. 🍫 Using this application, the system knows where each praline should be placed based on its orientation. A true engineering showcase!

Connect a few and you get a structure that can expand, contract, roll, and reshape itself. If a link breaks or comes loose, the robot grabs a spare module nearby and rebuilds itself. Combining AI-powered mobile manipulation with a high-density grid design, Gridpicker achieves up to 2x the throughput of shuttle systems at 40% lower cost and using 5x less labor. Most fascinating: The cost of Gridpicker DECREASES as automation increases 🤯 Traditional systems separate storage and picking. If you want more robotic picking, you add expensive robotic cells, more infrastructure, and more complexity. Gridpicker was designed differently: Each robot both retrieves items and picks them. The greater the share of robotically pickable items: The more productive each robot becomes The fewer robots are needed The lower the cost per order That means progress in AI and VLAs directly translate into better system economics over time. Gravity-defying robot! 🦎 VertiGo is a wall-climbing robot created by Disney Research and ETH Zürich that can transition between ground and wall. The robot can move on a wall quickly and with agility. VertiGo has four wheels, two tiltable propellers, and two tiltable propellers. One pair of wheels is steerable, and each propeller has two degrees of freedom for adjusting the direction of thrust. The choice of two propellers rather than one enables a floor-to-wall transition, thrust is applied both towards the wall using the rear propeller and in an upward direction using the front propeller, resulting in a flip onto the wall. Robots moving railcars! 🚃 Did you know that KUKA is also in the mobile robots business? Yes, you heard that right. And not just any robots. Robots that carry up to 56 tons! 🏋🏼 The railcar production process is highly complex, particularly when moving massive cars sideways within a plant. This challenge has been addressed at the Siemens facility in Germany using the OmniMove system from KUKA. The system allows for precise positioning, enabling the units to lift, move, and lower railcars with remarkable accuracy. With Mecanum wheels, the OmniMove units can move seamlessly in any direction, making the process incredibly efficient. Together, these units are capable of lifting up to 56 tons, streamlining heavy railcar production. This one is clearly tele-operated, but just looking at it makes me feel safer when I see a human in the loop. Robotics is entering the mainstream! 👀 Let's accept this fact. Consumptionism – stonks. Possibilities (HW + SW) – stonks. Demographics - not stonks. Modern robots are often designed to interact with our legacy world, whether it's a household, a factory, or a shipyard. That means they often need to work with existing machines, tools, and spaces. In short: retrofitting. Improving old machines with new technologies without major interference in their operation. Modern way of integrating things. You don't have to change the entire environment to deploy a robot. The robot will adapt, just as human would when freshly hired. The promise is to have an army of robots to help with the world designed for us. I also believe that general purpose robots, are not a direct competition for single purpose machines (like a highly efficient specialized packaging machine, for example). There are no robots at all. Instead of robots, over 300 linear actuators precisely control the ball’s movement on the field, demonstrating incredible accuracy. The most practical Boston Dynamics robot right now probably isn’t humanoid. It’s a truck-unloading robot called “Stretch”, which is already operational with DHL (the logistics company has a deal for 1,000 of these to unload trailers). For DHL employees, moving 50lb boxes for hours on end in 100-degree trailers is a huge injury risk. DHL has already trained 100 remote operators and working with more to learn how to operate Stretch, which is made up of three main pieces: ▫️Base: Size of a pallet with wheels. ▫️Arm: For manipulation with a vacuum gripper with suction cups that can carry up to 50lbs. ▫️Perception mast: A visual system that recognizes different box sizes and shapes, which informs the AI algos what objects to grab and move. Can’t dance but still pretty useful.
