Awesome, SpaceX has begun exploring using Starlink to enable high-bandwidth around the Moon! Traditionally, deep space coms has relied on radio frequencies. This will enable gigabit connectivity anywhere on the Lunar Surface. Imagine watching livestreams. It’s gonna happen.

NEWS: SpaceX requested on Friday that the FCC make “several small but meaningful updates” to its 2nd-generation Starlink network. “Together, this modification and its companion amendment will enable the Gen2 system to deliver gigabit-speed, truly low-latency broadband and ubiquitous mobile connectivity to all Americans and the billions of people globally who still lack access to adequate broadband.” The request includes lowering the altitude of three Starlink satellite shells by 45 and 60 km. SpaceX also wants the Starlink satellites to harness the E-band radio frequencies to help better deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband to users, including through fixed satellite dishes and mobile equipment. “The upgraded Gen2 system will feature enhanced hardware that can use higher gain and more advanced beamforming and digital processing technologies and provide more targeted and robust coverage for American consumers – These upgraded satellites can maximize the use of the available bandwidth, enabling more efficient allocation of resources and facilitating a broader range of services.” Gen2 Starlink satellites will be launched with Starship

SpaceX successfully simulated the deployment of 20 Starlink V3 satellites during Starship V3’s first flight. Starship V3 can hold up to 60 of these satellites. Each Starlink V3 satellite offers 1 Tbps of downlink capacity. That means a single Starship launch can add up to 60 Tbps of total downlink capacity to the network, more than 20x what a Falcon 9 delivers today with V2 satellites. Insane scale. V3 will also enable 5G high-bandwidth direct-to-cell connectivity anywhere in the world. This would only be possible with Starship. 🦾

The crew has already spent a full day in space and completed early milestones, including manually piloting the Orion spacecraft. Today they will perform the critical trans-lunar injection burn that will send them on their path toward the Moon. "Starlink might be the #1 technology over time that improves people's standard of living around the world." - Elon Musk Starlink will enable high speed access for remote villages/towns around the world that otherwise would lack access. This potentially enables education and opportunity to reach literally the entire earth. I think for a portion of the world's population, especially the most poor, Starlink has potentially to radically make a difference. Lots of things to be optimistic about the future. This is one of them.
