China's renewable expansion receives endless Western applause. Its coal expansion, however, gets far less attention. At the start of 2026, China had 1,207 operating coal-fired power stations. In 2025 alone, it added 78 GW of coal capacity, the most in a decade, and began building another 83 GW, with a record 161 GW of projects either proposed or revived. China consumed more than 4.9 billion tons of coal during 2025 -- which is 56% of the global total. One country burned more coal than the rest of the world combined -- and green activists applaud it. China is building wind and solar, yes, but it is not gambling its industrial economy on intermittent power. AI is the next industrial age, but it requires colossal quantities of dependable electricity. China is securing this mainly via coal, gas and nuclear. Meanwhile, Net Zero governments are closing reliable power stations, raising energy costs and driving industry east. Nations that continue sacrificing power on the altar of Net Zero will not lead the AI revolution. They will watch the future being built elsewhere.

Watch: Gujarat is rapidly advancing towards ‘Net Zero’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Clean and Green India’ vision, reducing carbon emissions by 49.79 million tonnes and generating a record 67,655 million units of green electricity in FY 2025-26. Mark Carney previews the agreement with Alberta that is based on the MOU and his green ideologies. "Alberta has committed to reduce methane emissions by 75% over the next decade. We'll announce tomorrow an implementation agreement which includes strengthening industrial carbon pricing to send clear investment signals and to reward decarbonization. This is essential to our clean electricity agenda. To create the conditions to build the clean grid of the future, we need a carbon pricing market that actually works." This has the potential to increase the effective rate of industrial carbon tax in Alberta by 600%.

Japan is lifting restrictions on coal power. Older, decommissioned plants are being brought back online. Japan depends heavily on imported LNG, with much of it passing through the Persian Gulf. Rising tensions in the Middle East are putting that supply at serious risk. Coal solves the problem. It can be sourced from diverse, stable suppliers and stockpiled domestically at scale. This reverses the country's green policy. Coal use was set to fall from about 31% in 2022 to 19% by 2030. Now capacity is being brought back. And this isn't isolated. Across Asia, governments are shifting priorities. They are hurriedly returning to reliability and ditching CO2 emission targets. Energy security trumps ideology.

Xinjiang’s cumulative outbound power transmission has surpassed 1 trillion kWh, with approximately one-third being clean green energy. This volume is sufficient to meet the domestic electricity needs of China’s 1.4 billion residents for over 300 days. Endowed with abundant coal, solar, and wind resources, Xinjiang serves as a national strategic base for energy security and a vital sending hub in China’s west-to-east power transmission progrom. To address the mismatch between the distribution of resources and the space for energy consumption within China, Xinjiang has constructed five major outbound channels. These “energy superhighways” have successfully enabled the nationwide allocation of resources, transforming the wind and sun of western China into the driving force for eastern China’s high-quality development.
