Endless coal trains--150 cars long--are constantly feeding China's power plants. The generated electricity helps manufacture the solar panels later shipped to the West. Panels made with coal, transported on oil-burning ships, installed and called emissions-free. Asia, led by China and India, currently operates over 5,000 coal plants, with almost 1,000 more on the way. The West is doing the opposite. Europe has retired, cancelled or mothballed over 1,000 coal plants. China is building power, the West is dismantling it.

AEMO has developed an animation to answer this important question, “what will keep the lights on in the future?” As coal power stations retire, renewables, connected with transmission, supported by storage & gas, is the lowest-cost way to supply electricity to consumers.

China's renewable expansion receives endless Western applause. Its coal expansion, however, gets far less attention. At the start of 2026, China had 1,207 operating coal-fired power stations. In 2025 alone, it added 78 GW of coal capacity, the most in a decade, and began building another 83 GW, with a record 161 GW of projects either proposed or revived. China consumed more than 4.9 billion tons of coal during 2025 -- which is 56% of the global total. One country burned more coal than the rest of the world combined -- and green activists applaud it. China is building wind and solar, yes, but it is not gambling its industrial economy on intermittent power. AI is the next industrial age, but it requires colossal quantities of dependable electricity. China is securing this mainly via coal, gas and nuclear. Meanwhile, Net Zero governments are closing reliable power stations, raising energy costs and driving industry east. Nations that continue sacrificing power on the altar of Net Zero will not lead the AI revolution. They will watch the future being built elsewhere.

Germany built one of the largest wind and solar fleets on Earth. It dismantled its nuclear power stations and retired its coal, with the promise that green energy would power its future. The country spent billions transitioning. Then winter arrived, and "Dunkelflaut" hit -- the dark windless dead zone. Wind and solar fell to barely 5% of demand. The grid staggered, and Germany was forced to fire up old coal plants it said had closed forever, and import expensive nuclear from France. This is the physics politicians fail to mention, and a point many people still fail to grasp: When the wind dies and the sun sets, renewables disappear. The only way the grid survives, the only reason countless millions don't freeze to death, is thanks to oil, coal, nuclear and gas.

Mark Carney previews the agreement with Alberta that is based on the MOU and his green ideologies. "Alberta has committed to reduce methane emissions by 75% over the next decade. We'll announce tomorrow an implementation agreement which includes strengthening industrial carbon pricing to send clear investment signals and to reward decarbonization. This is essential to our clean electricity agenda. To create the conditions to build the clean grid of the future, we need a carbon pricing market that actually works." This has the potential to increase the effective rate of industrial carbon tax in Alberta by 600%.

Japan is lifting restrictions on coal power. Older, decommissioned plants are being brought back online. Japan depends heavily on imported LNG, with much of it passing through the Persian Gulf. Rising tensions in the Middle East are putting that supply at serious risk. Coal solves the problem. It can be sourced from diverse, stable suppliers and stockpiled domestically at scale. This reverses the country's green policy. Coal use was set to fall from about 31% in 2022 to 19% by 2030. Now capacity is being brought back. And this isn't isolated. Across Asia, governments are shifting priorities. They are hurriedly returning to reliability and ditching CO2 emission targets. Energy security trumps ideology.

Xinjiang’s cumulative outbound power transmission has surpassed 1 trillion kWh, with approximately one-third being clean green energy. This volume is sufficient to meet the domestic electricity needs of China’s 1.4 billion residents for over 300 days. Endowed with abundant coal, solar, and wind resources, Xinjiang serves as a national strategic base for energy security and a vital sending hub in China’s west-to-east power transmission progrom. To address the mismatch between the distribution of resources and the space for energy consumption within China, Xinjiang has constructed five major outbound channels. These “energy superhighways” have successfully enabled the nationwide allocation of resources, transforming the wind and sun of western China into the driving force for eastern China’s high-quality development.

This week on Downstream, technology analyst and author Dan Wang joins Aaron Bastani to compare China, the US and the UK. “For the Chinese, there is no problem that cannot be solved with yet another bridge, road, highway, hyperscaler, coal plant, home, and so China is just building its way out of all of its problems.” He calls China the “engineering state.” By contrast, Wang says the US is a country “made by the lawyers, for the lawyers, and of the lawyers.” Watch the full episode now on Novara’s YouTube channel.

Lonnie Johnson didn’t just take the $72.9 million Hasbro owed him and retire; he used it to fund a mission to literally power the world. The same mind that gave us the Super Soaker is now refining the JTEC (Johnson Thermo-Electrochemical Converter), a device that turns wasted heat into clean electricity with twice the efficiency of current technology. At 76, he’s still in the lab in Atlanta, building an engine with no moving parts that could make solar power as cheap as coal. As of early 2026, his company, JTEC Energy, is preparing to deploy its first commercial units to harvest waste heat from factories and power plants, turning what we used to throw away into the energy of the future

#WATCH | Raipur, Chhattisgarh: On the Green Steel and Mining Summit, CII Chairman, Chhattisgarh, Bajrang Goel, says, “There will be approximately 8 technical sessions, and over 400 delegates have already registered, coming from across India and even abroad. We have already received confirmations from experts arriving from South Africa, the US, and Brazil. At this event, we will discuss how to reduce carbon emissions, enhance environmental protection, and foster sustainability within the industry, specifically regarding productivity, carbon consumption, and carbon emissions. Policymakers, manufacturers, and technical experts will participate in panel discussions, and we will also release a paper discussing the roadmap to making steel carbon-neutral by 2047. Chhattisgarh is renowned for its steel production. The state possesses coal and iron ore mines and plays a pivotal role in the nation's development. By reducing carbon emissions and producing green steel here, we can export the product to both domestic and international markets. Currently, European nations are actively seeking green steel and are even willing to pay a premium for it. Chhattisgarh is a crucial part of the drive to realise Prime Minister Modi's vision of making the country carbon-neutral and minimising carbon emissions by 2047.
