In an era long before digital effects, Hollywood relied on incredible artistry to create on-screen illusions. One breathtaking example is in Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936), where a heart-stopping scene—appearing to show Chaplin on the edge of a towering building—was actually filmed on a studio floor using a glass matte painting. Artists hand-painted cityscapes on sheets of glass to give the illusion of depth, danger, and height. This analog trickery required precision and perspective — one mistake could ruin the shot. Yet it worked flawlessly, creating a visual illusion so strong, even modern viewers are left stunned. 🎥 Via: A Bucket of Water and a Glass Matte / YouTube
