Yorkshire, starting on Friday 11 July, a temporary use ban (TUB), which is a restriction on the use of hosepipes, will come into effect. This will help our region’s reservoir levels recover and protect Yorkshire's water resources throughout the summer months, following one of the driest springs on record and the region being in drought. We've tried everything possible to avoid these restrictions, and despite our customers' help to save water where they can and our efforts to manage water resources, including adding an extra 100 people to our leakage team and upgrading our infrastructure to reduce leaks and bursts, the dry weather and warmer-than-usual temperatures have increased demand. We have supplied an additional 4.3 billion litres of water between April and June compared to a typical year - that's enough to supply Leeds for five weeks. This has left our reservoirs more depleted than expected and lower than average for this time of year. As a result, we’re kindly asking everyone to please put their hosepipes away for a bit. We understand you may have some questions about the restrictions. You can find detailed FAQs, including activities covered by the hosepipe restrictions and who would be exempt from it, on our website at or watch the video below to see how this might affect you. The restrictions will be in place until the region has seen significant rainfall to bring reservoirs and groundwater stocks back to where they need to be. This may last into the winter months, but rest assured, we will lift it as soon as we are able to. From Martin County, KY to Delbarton, WV — the coal industry’s mess keeps poisoning our region, and politicians keep failing us. In 2000, Martin County, Kentucky suffered one of the worst coal slurry spills in U.S. history - over 300 million gallons of toxic sludge (loaded with arsenic, mercury, and more) flooded the waterways after a Massey impoundment failed. Rivers turned black, aquatic life died by the millions, and the drinking water for tens of thousands was contaminated. More than 25 years later? Many residents are still drinking bottled water. 96% rely on it for drinking because the tap water remains unreliable, with frequent outages, line breaks, and quality issues. They pay some of the highest water rates in Kentucky for water they often can’t trust. When disasters like the recent orange water crisis in Delbarton, Mingo County, WV hit, it doesn’t stop at the state line. These creeks and rivers connect all of us across eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, and beyond. The pollution flows downstream. The health risks don’t check borders. Some locals believe these incidents aren’t just accidents, they suspect old mines are being allowed (or even encouraged) to flood and discharge so companies can more easily extract rare earth minerals from the acid mine drainage and waste. While the world scrambles for materials for EVs, magnets, and tech, our hollows pay the price with orange rivers and undrinkable water. Whether it’s Kentucky politics dragging its feet on infrastructure or West Virginia downplaying blowouts and acid mine drainage, our mountain communities keep paying the price for decades of extraction. Coal built this region, but its legacy left us with ruined water, struggling economies, and broken promises. We need real investment in clean water systems that actually work not more studies and excuses. Today marks an important milestone in our national journey toward universal access to clean and safe water. I officially opened the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme in Marondera on behalf of President E.D. Mnangagwa. We celebrate yet another demonstration of His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of all Zimbabweans. This initiative is part of the President’s broader vision to ensure that every community has reliable access to clean water, in line with Vision 2030, the priorities outlined in NDS1 and NDS2, and the global aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals. While these boreholes provide immediate relief to our communities, they are also a temporary measure as Government advances long‑term, sustainable solutions to the urban water crisis through major projects such as Kunzvi Dam and other strategic water infrastructure developments across the country. I am particularly encouraged by the spirit of unity displayed here today. The presence of officials from across the political spectrum, including representatives from the CCC, among them the Mayor of Marondera-speaks volumes about the growing bipartisan cooperation among Zimbabweans. There is a major concern about Data Centers that are using closed loop cooling systems that’s not being talked about There are a lot of chemicals being put into the water used in these systems. That water has to be flushed out every couple years Whistleblowers say that chemical water is being pushed into our streams and waterways and may have extremely limited cleaning requirements depending on state “I'm getting whistleblowers on the inside saying that they're taking all that waste and they're just running it down into the sewers. They're wanting to go to more closed cooling systems, and in those closed cooling systems, you still are gonna be using chemicals. There's no regulations about every 2 years when you have to clean out a cooling closed system, where are you gonna throw all of those chemicals?” “Taking polluted water and running it through system and dumping it into a river and it flows downstream, that will have a natural dilution, would resolve the issue, and it's not. Even if it's a closed cooling system, that water that's recycling in there, eventually they have to clean those systems. They have to release that water. And are there any regulations to look at what chemicals aren't in that water before we release it into the environment and just create another pollution issue?” “Right now it's a free-for-all out there.” It’s not a complete free for all, it depends on the states and general federal regulations. The natural range of deuterium in drinking water on Earth is 90 to 160 ppm. Where you fall within that range depends entirely on where you live — and almost nobody tracking their health knows this. The measurement data comes from István Fórizs — Hungarian geochemist and isotope hydrologist who studies the movement and distribution of isotopes through water systems in nature. Ocean water carries 156 ppm — the reference point and the highest deuterium concentration found in liquid water under normal conditions. Tropical and high-evaporation lakes such as Lake Chad and Lake Van in Turkey sit at approximately 160 ppm because evaporation concentrates deuterium — lighter water evaporates first and heavier water remains. Mediterranean precipitation trends toward the higher end of the range. Northern Europe trends progressively lower moving north. Greenland and Antarctic ice sit between 90 and 110 ppm — the most deuterium-depleted natural water found on Earth's surface. The continental effect explains the geography. Water evaporating from the ocean forms clouds. As those clouds move inland, each rainfall removes heavier isotopes preferentially — the remaining vapor becomes progressively lighter. By the time precipitation reaches the center of a continent it carries significantly less deuterium than coastal rain. Temperature adds another layer. Precipitation in Budapest measures 152 ppm in summer and 132 ppm in winter. A 20 ppm variation driven purely by temperature — the same city, every year. But tap water tells a more complex story. Most drinking water in Hungary comes from groundwater — an accumulated average of precipitation over time that leans slightly toward winter values because winter precipitation infiltrates the ground at higher rates than summer precipitation, which tends to evaporate before reaching the aquifer. Some of that groundwater infiltrated the earth during the ice age — over 11,000 years ago — when global temperatures were significantly lower. It carries less deuterium than modern precipitation from the same region because the planet was colder when it fell. The geological record of temperature is readable in the deuterium content of ancient groundwater. Which means the deuterium content of your drinking water is shaped not just by where you live today — but by the climatic history of the region over thousands of years. The gap between ~90 ppm Antarctic melted snow and ~160 ppm tropical/evaporative water spans most of the biologically active window that Professor Roman Zubarev from Karolinska Institute identified as regulating cell growth. Engineers discover a new class of materials that passively harvest water from air | University of Pennsylvania A serendipitous observation in a Chemical Engineering lab at Penn Engineering has led to a surprising discovery: a new class of nanostructured materials that can pull water from the air, collect it in pores and release it onto surfaces without the need for any external energy. The research, published in Science Advances, was conducted by an interdisciplinary team, including Daeyeon Lee, Russell Pearce and Elizabeth Crimian Heuer Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE), Amish Patel, Professor in CBE, Baekmin Kim, a postdoctoral scholar in Lee's lab and first author, and Stefan Guldin, Professor in Complex Soft Matter at the Technical University of Munich. Their work describes a material that could open the door to new ways to collect water from the air in arid regions and devices that cool electronics or buildings using the power of evaporation. "We weren't even trying to collect water," says Lee. "We were working on another project testing the combination of hydrophilic nanopores and hydrophobic polymers when Bharath Venkatesh, a former Ph.D. student in our lab, noticed water droplets appearing on a material we were testing. It didn't make sense. That's when we started asking questions." Those questions led to an in-depth study of a new type of amphiphilic nanoporous material: one that blends water-loving (hydrophilic) and water-repelling (hydrophobic) components in a unique nanoscale structure. The result is a material that both captures moisture from air and simultaneously pushes that moisture out as droplets. Water-Collecting Nanopores When water condenses on surfaces, it usually requires either a drop in temperature or very high humidity levels. Conventional water harvesting methods rely on these principles, often requiring energy input to chill surfaces or a dense fog to form to collect water passively from humid environments. But Lee and Patel's system works differently. Instead of cooling, their material relies on capillary condensation, a process where water vapor condenses inside tiny pores even at lower humidity. This is not new. What is new is that in their system, the water doesn't just stay trapped inside the pores, as it usually does in these types of materials. "In typical nanoporous materials, once the water enters the pores, it stays there," explains Patel. "But in our material, the water moves, first condensing inside the pores, then emerging onto the surface as droplets. That's never been seen before in a system like this, and at first we doubted our observations." A Material That Defies Physics Before they understood what was happening, the researchers first thought that water was simply condensing onto the surface of the material due to an artifact of their experimental setup, such as a temperature gradient in the lab. To rule that out, they increased the thickness of the material to see if the amount of water collected on the surface would change. "If what we were observing was due to surface condensation alone, the thickness of the material wouldn't change the amount of water present," explains Lee. But, the total amount of water collected increased as the film's thickness increased, proving that the water droplets forming on the surface came from inside the material. Even more surprising: the droplets didn't evaporate quickly, as thermodynamics would predict. "According to the curvature and size of the droplets, they should have been evaporating," says Patel. "But they were not; they remained stable for extended periods." With a material that could potentially defy the laws of physics on their hands, Lee and Patel sent their design off to a collaborator to see if their results were replicable. "We study porous films under a wide range of conditions, using subtle changes in light polarization to probe complex nanoscale phenomena," says Guldin. "But we've never seen anything like this. It's absolutely fascinating and will clearly spark new and exciting research." A Stabilized Cycle of Condensation and Release It turns out that they had created a material with just the right balance of water-attracting nanoparticles and water-repelling plastic -- polyethylene -- to create a nanoparticle film with this special property. "We accidentally hit the sweet spot," says Lee. "The droplets are connected to hidden reservoirs in the pores below. These reservoirs are continuously replenished from water vapor in the air, creating a feedback loop made possible by this perfect balance of water-loving and water-repelling materials." A Platform for Passive Water Harvesting and More Beyond the physics-defying behavior, the materials' simplicity is part of what makes them so promising. Made from common polymers and nanoparticles using scalable fabrication methods, these films could be integrated into passive water harvesting devices for arid regions, surfaces for cooling electronics or smart coatings that respond to ambient humidity. "We're still uncovering the mechanisms at play," says Patel. "But the potential is exciting. We're learning from biology -- how cells and proteins manage water in complex environments -- and applying that to design better materials." "This is exactly what Penn does best, bringing together expertise in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry and biology to solve big problems," adds Lee. The next steps include studying how to optimize the balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, scale the material for real-world use and investigating how to make the collected droplets roll off surfaces efficiently. Ultimately, the researchers hope this discovery will lead to technologies that offer clean water in dry climates or more sustainable cooling methods using only the water vapor already in the air. A billion dollar company backed by hedge funds is planning on pumping 15 BILLION gallons of water out of a Texas aquifer per year. This will have devastating consequences 🚨 The man who owns the company was on the board of the groundwater district that reviews the permits “Small town corruption and greed and good old boys in Texas making deals that sell out their very own neighbors and communities. — That's exactly what's happening right now in rural East Texas, and hardly anyone's talking about it. But I'm not afraid to spill the tea and name names. So let's get into it. A company backed by a billionaire hedge fund from out of town is trying to come in and drill roughly 30 industrial wells into the Carrizo Wilcox aquifer. If approved, this would pull roughly 15 billion with a B gallons of water out of that aquifer per per year. This is the same aquifer that thousands upon thousands of people across several different counties rely on for their water. And those 15 billion gallons of water that would be pulled out every year isn't going to go to our families and our farms and our schools and our communities. That water would be piped out and sold to fuel, development and other areas of the state, leaving us to deal with the consequences. Water levels will drop, pressure will drop, and wells will run dry. This is our only water source for our families, for our livestock, for our ranches, farms, schools, and everything else in our communities. But here's the kicker, and here's where that corruption and greed comes in. The well drilling company that was hired to drill all of these industrial wells for this project is owned by a man named Donald A. Foster. And up until just yesterday, Donald Foster was on the board of the groundwater district that reviews these permits. This is obviously a huge conflict of interest, but it gets worse. Texas law requires that board members with a financial conflict recuse themselves from all discussions and decisions regarding that issue. But I've been digging through public records, including minutes from this board's meetings over the last year and a half, and these public records do not show that Donald Foster recused himself. Public records show that Donald Foster was present during discussions of this project and even participated in enclosed sessions where this project was discussed. During one meeting, there was even a vote on whether or not to consult with a hydrologist for these permits for these wells. And it does not show that Donald Foster recused himself or abstained from that vote. In fact, it looks like he voted and it passed unanimously. Now, in April 2025, he did abstain from one vote. The board was voting to accept the applications for these permits as administratively complete elite, and he did not participate in that vote. He did abstain. — Donald Foster resigned from that board yesterday. But you don't get to sit in secret meetings and rubber stamp billion dollar water grabs that line your pockets and then try to get out of the hot seat at the last minute. Not when it's our land, our wells, and our lives all on the line. I guess the people who actually live here were never supposed to notice, let alone fight back. But we did notice. We did find out what you were doing. And we're not just going to roll over and take it. We will not let our communities be drained, silenced and sold. At least not without a fight.”
