Yorkshire, starting on Friday 11 July, a temporary use ban (TUB), which is a restriction on the use of hosepipes, will come into effect. This will help our region’s reservoir levels recover and protect Yorkshire's water resources throughout the summer months, following one of the driest springs on record and the region being in drought. We've tried everything possible to avoid these restrictions, and despite our customers' help to save water where they can and our efforts to manage water resources, including adding an extra 100 people to our leakage team and upgrading our infrastructure to reduce leaks and bursts, the dry weather and warmer-than-usual temperatures have increased demand. We have supplied an additional 4.3 billion litres of water between April and June compared to a typical year - that's enough to supply Leeds for five weeks. This has left our reservoirs more depleted than expected and lower than average for this time of year. As a result, we’re kindly asking everyone to please put their hosepipes away for a bit. We understand you may have some questions about the restrictions. You can find detailed FAQs, including activities covered by the hosepipe restrictions and who would be exempt from it, on our website at or watch the video below to see how this might affect you. The restrictions will be in place until the region has seen significant rainfall to bring reservoirs and groundwater stocks back to where they need to be. A life-or-death situation, twofold: a mother elephant and her tiny calf had fallen into a well and were hopelessly stuck within its watery depths. The mum was submerged, using her trunk as a snorkel, whilst her baby struggled to keep her head above water. When our teams arrived, the exhausted calf couldn't tread water much longer. Immediate action was needed. We guided ropes around the calf and dragged her to solid ground, carrying her to shade, away from her mother's distressed calls. Meanwhile, our bowser and supplemental water pump began the slow work of filling the deep well, raising the water level so the mother could float to freedom. Hours later, when the water reached the lip, we threw ropes around the mum and used the bowser and Land Cruiser to pull in tandem and haul her out. The moment she stood on all four feet, we released her calf. They ran straight to each other, reuniting with palpable relief. We flew home to the most wonderful sight below: baby happily suckling from her mum, finally free and together. This ⬆️ epic emergency unfolded back in 2024; many more emergencies have unfolded since then. In the past week, we've rescued a calf from a well, and attended 14 veterinary treatments. From Martin County, KY to Delbarton, WV — the coal industry’s mess keeps poisoning our region, and politicians keep failing us. In 2000, Martin County, Kentucky suffered one of the worst coal slurry spills in U.S. history - over 300 million gallons of toxic sludge (loaded with arsenic, mercury, and more) flooded the waterways after a Massey impoundment failed. Rivers turned black, aquatic life died by the millions, and the drinking water for tens of thousands was contaminated. More than 25 years later? Many residents are still drinking bottled water. 96% rely on it for drinking because the tap water remains unreliable, with frequent outages, line breaks, and quality issues. They pay some of the highest water rates in Kentucky for water they often can’t trust. When disasters like the recent orange water crisis in Delbarton, Mingo County, WV hit, it doesn’t stop at the state line. These creeks and rivers connect all of us across eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, and beyond. The pollution flows downstream. The health risks don’t check borders. Some locals believe these incidents aren’t just accidents, they suspect old mines are being allowed (or even encouraged) to flood and discharge so companies can more easily extract rare earth minerals from the acid mine drainage and waste. While the world scrambles for materials for EVs, magnets, and tech, our hollows pay the price with orange rivers and undrinkable water. Whether it’s Kentucky politics dragging its feet on infrastructure or West Virginia downplaying blowouts and acid mine drainage, our mountain communities keep paying the price for decades of extraction. Coal built this region, but its legacy left us with ruined water, struggling economies, and broken promises. We need real investment in clean water systems that actually work not more studies and excuses. We will care for the children who, instead of going to school, spend their days fetching water. We will care for every single citizen for whom water becomes the most precious commodity during the summer. We will care for our future generations. ​The little we can do is: 1) ​Stop wasting water in our daily routines. 2) ​Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. 3) ​Use a bucket for bathing instead of running the shower. 4) ​Recycle the wastewater from your RO systems and AC units for cleaning or watering plants. 5) ​Reuse water from washing food (like vegetables, rice, or lentils) to water the plants at home or in your locality. 6) ​Carry a refillable bottle instead of buying single-use plastic mineral water bottles every time. 7) ​Finish the last drop if you do use a plastic water bottle, rather than taking one sip and throwing the rest away. 8) ​Adopt rainwater harvesting in your home or building as much as possible. 9) ​Take a pledge not to pollute water bodies, as millions of people depend on that water directly. 10) ​Start planting more trees to help restore groundwater levels. 11) ​Repost and share this with others and be part of the change.

An orphan never graduates alone. Around age three, our orphaned elephants leave the Nursery for one of three Reintegration Units – and their closest friends make the journey with them. The destination comes down to an orphan's physical condition, the herd dynamics at each unit and conditions in the field. Most head to Voi or Ithumba in Tsavo East. Those unable to cover Tsavo's dry-season distances – like Murera and Sonje, whose injuries would have made that life untenable – graduate to Umani Springs, where the Kibwezi Forest's underground springs keep food and water within reach all year. I was delighted to commission 71 urban road projects yesterday in Enugu, in fulfillment of the pledge we made to our people who gave us their mandate one year ago. We shall continue to serve Ndi Enugu with every fibre of our being. To make sure that all Trunk A and Trunk B roads in the urban and rural areas are paved, we shall embark on the construction of additional 80 roads, and also see that streetlights as well as water taps are functional. Our rural communities are not left out. We are committed to constructing 10 kilometers of roads in each of our state's 260 wards. We are re-energized to work even harder by the wonderful support from our people. Tomorrow is here!

Today marks an important milestone in our national journey toward universal access to clean and safe water. I officially opened the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme in Marondera on behalf of President E.D. Mnangagwa. We celebrate yet another demonstration of His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of all Zimbabweans. This initiative is part of the President’s broader vision to ensure that every community has reliable access to clean water, in line with Vision 2030, the priorities outlined in NDS1 and NDS2, and the global aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals. While these boreholes provide immediate relief to our communities, they are also a temporary measure as Government advances long‑term, sustainable solutions to the urban water crisis through major projects such as Kunzvi Dam and other strategic water infrastructure developments across the country. I am particularly encouraged by the spirit of unity displayed here today. Some things we can all do: 🌿 Refuse single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic consumption. 🌿 Segregate and manage waste at source. 🌿 Waste less. Consume mindfully. 🌿 Protect forests, trees, wetlands and natural ecosystems. 🌿 Support organisations working for wildlife conservation and environmental protection. 🌿 Work with local authorities and communities to scale solutions that restore ecosystems and build resilience. 🌿 Invest in businesses and innovations that place people and planet at the heart of progress. The contrasts are stark. While some communities struggle for clean air, water and dignified living conditions, others continue to consume far beyond the limits of what our planet can sustain. It is time to stop treating environmental action as an optional extra. It is time to move beyond token gestures and towards meaningful change. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us remember that every choice we make has an impact on nature, on the climate, and on each other. Some things we can all do: 🌿 Refuse single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic consumption. 🌿 Segregate and manage waste at source. 🌿 Waste less. Consume mindfully. 🌿 Protect forests, trees, wetlands and natural ecosystems. 🌿 Support organisations working for wildlife conservation and environmental protection. 🌿 Work with local authorities and communities to scale solutions that restore ecosystems and build resilience. 🌿 Invest in businesses and innovations that place people and planet at the heart of progress. These are some of the things I try to do. Some of the things we can all do. The environment is not separate from us. It is the source of every breath we take, every meal we eat, every drop of water we drink. Let us not look away from reality. Let us act with courage, urgency and hope. For nature. For climate.
