China does not want nuclear proliferation. China has reasons to keep relations with Washington stable. None of that means Beijing has agreed to help Washington strangle Iran. China knows what it means to be invaded, sanctioned, humiliated and told by stronger powers that submission is “responsibility.” That history matters. Beijing may pressure Tehran. It may demand restraint. It may refuse to endorse Iranian actions. But joining a stronger power to kick a country while it is fighting for economic survival is a very different thing. America keeps mistaking Chinese pragmatism for ideological surrender. That is usually where the miscalculation begins.
