#FlashbackFriday to when Pips first arrived at Kaluku. 12 months ago, an orphaned giraffe calf – just a couple of weeks old – was reported near our Kaluku Field Headquarters in Tsavo. She had been seen alone, quietly coming to a water trough to drink before melting back into the thick bush, always disappearing before anyone could reach her. It was our SWT/KWS Canine Unit, out on patrol, who finally found her still on her own. A helicopter search confirmed what we feared: there were no other giraffes anywhere nearby. We later learned that her mother had been killed by lions. Catching her was a mission. She was dizzyingly quick, determined to give the team the slip, and the perfect size and colour to vanish into the bush. But, as is always the case, the team persisted – and finally managed to secure the little calf. Today, that same tiny, hard-to-catch orphan is growing up safe in our care at Kaluku, where she will eventually reclaim her place in the wild. You can be part of Pips’ ongoing story by adopting her:

Territorial fights are a normal part of rhino life – but rarely does one end with a combatant wandering down a busy road! After bursting through the fence, this huge male found himself stranded outside Solio Rhino Sanctuary. Our SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Mobile Vet Unit raced to the scene, where they worked with the Solio Conservancy team to dart him, guide him into a crate and safely return him home. Another wild life protected, thanks to our Mobile Vet Units and the Kenya Wildlife Service. Learn more about their vital work:

The rains have graced the land, transforming the Tsavo wilderness into a lush, green paradise. As our pilot headed out on patrol, a lone bull elephant stood on a kopje, framed by the vibrant bush below. This magnificent scene feels timeless — a quiet reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature when it’s protected and nurtured. Our eyes in the sky not only safeguard Kenya’s wildlife but also bring us moments like this, where we witness the untamed magic of the wild.

This big bull was owning the Ithumba mud bath! Not so long ago, this sight was unthinkable. When we established our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in 2004, it was rare to see a single wild elephant. The northern sector of Tsavo had been scarred by decades of poaching and limited water resources, and as a result, wild elephants gave it a wide berth. Over the years, working in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, we helped secure Ithumba and nurtured it into a safe, sustainable habitat. Slowly but surely, the elephants returned. It started with a single bull ‘rafiki’ – and before long, the northern sector of the park transformed into a hub for elephants. This bull is one such regular visitor – an entirely wild elephant, feeling totally at ease in his environment.

Can you guess which of these is a wild elephant? Olsekki, one of our ex-orphans at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, has been spending a lot of time with a wild bull. They have been browsing side by side this week, walking the same routes through Tsavo. Our Keepers can tell the difference, but to anyone else, we suspect it's impossible to tell who grew up in the wild and who was rescued from the Maasai Mara in 2014. After more than a decade in our care, lots of sleepless nights, fingers suckled on and many many bottles of milk, Olsekki has been accepted into the wild herds around him. It's everything we worked towards.

$Meet Sulwe. You met her mum, Sonje, earlier this week. Sulwe was born wild on Christmas morning 2024, in the Kibwezi Forest just outside our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Sonje was once one of our most seriously wounded rescues – she arrived in 2012, nine months old, with a fractured leg – a victim of the poaching crisis. Thirteen years later, Sonje is wild, and Sulwe is the proof. She turned one in December. Earlier this year she tried to pull the tail of another wild-born calf, found out he was stronger than she expected, and ran back to her mother. Human or elephant, the kids all have to learn how to get along, it seems. Every calf like Sulwe is a bright light of hope for elephants. Meet some of the others, alive today because years ago we rescued their orphaned mothers:$

A throwback to baby Chamboi. When he first came to our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo, our orphan black rhino fit easily under a Keeper's arm. He took comfort from scratches in the early days – behind the ears, along the flanks, all the spots a Keeper learns by heart. He's much bigger now. Endlessly curious, off investigating every scent on the wind, happiest in the mud bath with Gruff the buffalo. But some routines stay the same and he still finds his Keepers at the end of the day. Find out what Chamboi looks like now, and how you can adopt him:

These dogs are a living, breathing testament to the impact of our field conservation work. 20 years ago, when we started working in the Northern Area of Tsavo East National Park, it was rare to see a single African wild dog. They are vulnerable to snares, human-wildlife conflict, and disease, and illegal activities in the area had taken their toll on the species. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, we started extensive anti-poaching work in the Northern Area, installing teams in the landscape and conducting regular ground and aerial patrols. By removing snares and reducing threats across the ecosystem, we helped create an environment where the dogs could rebound. Two decades later, the Northern Area is home to several healthy African wild dog packs. This one has about 16 members, and another nearby pack numbers around 40. To go from barely a single sighting to packs numbering in the dozens is a wonderful testament to how our anti-poaching efforts are paying off. Your support helps us bring about wholesale transformation for entire landscapes and endangered species. Learn more about our work:

Moon nursing at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, with Kitirua keeping watch. You can tell Kitirua by her ragged ears. She was rescued in 2011 from Amboseli as a tiny two-year-old, around the same time we were raising new mum Melia – the two of them grew up together at our Nairobi Nursery, and both now roam wild in Tsavo. While Melia has just had her second wild-born calf, Kitirua hasn't yet started a family of her own. It seemed, today, she was roped in to be on bodyguard duty for the new baby! Discover Kitirua's story:

Mzinga might be one of our Nursery herd’s ‘big sisters’ but remember the time she was just a blanketed baby who needed a nap? Her story started with a fortuitous chance sitghting of a tiny baby, all alone in the Tsavo wilderness. From that moment on, she hasn’t been alone since, taken straight to the heart of our Nairobi Nursery human–elephant family. One thing to know about Mzinga? She’s a fighter and a lover: having fought hard to survive her traumatic past, she is proving to be a nurturing nanny. Discover her story:

Kanika has never needed rescuing – and that’s the whole story. 🐘 Born wild to ex-orphan Kilabasi, who was once an orphan in our care and now roams free in Tsavo, Kanika knows Ithumba only as a place to visit. She and her mother have been frequent visitors of late, joining the dependent orphans for their lucerne breakfast supplements and at the midday mud bath. Kanika is one of 95 known calves born to elephants we have rescued, raised and rewilded – each one a testament to what can happen when an orphan is provided specialist care and a sense of family. Meet them all:

A woman was finally arrested in this case! Millions of dollars of overpriced wine down the drain. Turns out it was a disgruntled worker on a one-year contract who was fired from her position. She had the audacity to show up asking for work again, and boom the crime was solved.

In November 2010, our SWT/KWS Ziwani Anti-Poaching Team moved in to rescue a young orphaned elephant – and a lion leapt from the undergrowth and grabbed her by the neck. A KWS ranger fired shots into the air. The lion released its grip. And Ishanga, bleeding and paralysed by fear, was loaded into a Land Rover, then flown to our Nairobi Nursery. What followed were weeks of painstaking patience. Wild-eyed and terrified, she refused to let anyone near. She grappled with nightmares long after her wounds healed. But slowly, steadily, she healed. Today, Ishanga is living back in the wild, one of the success stories of our reintegration process. And over the weekend, she walked back to her old home to introduce her brand-new daughter to the Keepers who raised her. Read her full story:

Melia has a new daughter. She might too young for solids, but that doesn't stop her giving it a good go. Earlier this week, ex-orphan Melia walked up to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in northern Tsavo and introduced her brand new baby girl to Head Keeper Benjamin and the team. We've named her Moon. Moon is Melia's second – little sister to her firstborn Milo, who was born outside the same stockades back in 2022. The new arrival is bold and full of character. Melia came into our care as a yearling in 2009, alone and far from any wild herd. Seventeen years on, she's a mother of two, living wild – and still bringing her family home to say hello. Follow Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for more from Moon and our wild-born family.

The only thing sweeter than a baby elephant? A baby elephant sleeping soundly beneath mum! This was the sight that greeted our Ithumba Keepers yesterday morning. Ex-orphan Chaimu was waiting outside the stockades, with tiny Comet slumbering between her feet. Many of us circle home for life’s milestones, and Chaimu is no different. She has long since reclaimed her place in the wild, but right after giving birth on Friday, she shepherded her newborn back ‘home’ to Ithumba, so she could introduce her daughter to the people who raised her. In the days since, mum and baby have remained close, leaning on the support of their human-elephant family. Read Comet’s birth announcement:

This was the moment Wamata met her SWT family – and took her first helicopter flight. She was a small elephant, but it was a tight squeeze nonetheless. Her journey to safety began with an aerial sighting: a lone baby elephant, hiding in the forest. Our pilots conducted numerous searches to find her family, but came up short. With time running out, and a green light from the authorities to mount a rescue, we stepped in. To keep her calm during the flight, we gently secured her legs and placed a blanket over her eyes to reduce stimulation. Once at her destination – our Nairobi Nursery – this precious cargo was hand-delivered into a warm stable where her recovery began. That was back in 2024. Today, she is thriving. See how she looks now:
