Subsurface Ocean 🌊 •Liquid water: Beneath its thick icy crust, Europa is believed to harbor a global ocean of liquid water, possibly 100 km deep. •Tidal heating: Gravitational interactions with Jupiter and neighboring moons (Io, Ganymede) generate internal friction, preventing the ocean from freezing solid. 2. Chemical Ingredients for Life 🧪 •Essential elements: Observations suggest the presence of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur—elements necessary for life as we know it. •Oxidants on the surface: Europa’s icy surface contains oxidized compounds, which may interact with materials from the subsurface if mixed through tectonic activity. 3.
