Blue Max (1983) was developed by Bob Polin and published by Synapse Software for Atari 8-bit computers and Commodore 64. You control a World War I plane in an isometric view (those of you who played Zaxxon will feel familiar with the perspective), flying over rivers, roads, and enemy... territory. The goal is to bomb ground targets, strafe enemies, and ultimately destroy the enemy headquarters while surviving anti-aircraft fire and dogfights. For 1983 the graphics were absoluetly top notch, and so were the music and effects. Isometric perspectives were not common for early 80s games, and the altitude and timing when you dropped the bombs really mattered. Another one of those early 80s games that were developed by a single person - Polin created the original Atari version, Adams did the C64 port - I find that remarkable. Early 80s games had some of the best sound effects. The lasers, the explosions, and that "outer space" growling-noise... super eerie! Zaxxon (1982) was one of my favourites at the time. The 3D isometric graphics were the first of that kind I had eevr seen in a game. Normal "shooters" were vertically or horizontally scrolling - not diagonally. Not just eye-candy but requiring you to adjust height levels throughout the game, making it feel way more challenging. I don't think there was a game before Zaxxon that had this kind of design, right?

Beach-Head, published in 1983 by Access Software, is one of the hardest C64 games I have ever played. I was 8 when I first gave it a shot, so maybe that was part of the reason but even in my teenage years I still struggled to get to that final mega-bunker/fortress monstrosity at the end. It was extremely successful back in the day, selling around 250,000 copies, an excellent number for the early 80s, and especially for being one the first games from Access Software. The same programmer (Bruce Carver) went on to also make Raid over Moscow one year later, another classic of 80s gaming history - and one that was equally hard (especially that damn hangar!). I think in terms of design and gameplay you can see how they are related.

Beach-Head, published in 1983 by Access Software, is one of the hardest C64 games I have ever played. I was 8 when I first gave it a shot, so maybe that was part of the reason but even in my teenage years I still struggled to get to that final mega-bunker/fortress monstrosity at the end. It was extremely successful back in the day, selling around 250,000 copies, an excellent number for the early 80s, and especially for being one the first games from Access Software. The same programmer (Bruce Carver) went on to also make Raid over Moscow one year later, another classic of 80s gaming history - and one that was equally hard (especially that damn hangar!). I think in terms of design and gameplay you can see how they are related.

Forbidden Forest might look terribly dated now, but if you didn’t grow up with early 80s gaming standards, you'd never realise just how far ahead of its time it really was. Parallax scrolling that created real depth as trees and background layers moved at different speeds. A dynamic day-to-night cycle with a detailed moon and darkening sky. One of the earliest uses of animated blood/gore (woohoo, scary!) when enemies were hit. Context-sensitive music and eerie sound effects (including a pretty terrifying scream when certain creatures died). It was programmed by one person (Paul Norman), sold over a million copies and helped push what the C64 (and home computers) could do. Let that sink in for a second: 1 million copies in 1983! By the way, Norman's second game was Aztec Challenge, another 80s masterpiece. If you listen to the sound of the javelin throw in the opening level of Aztec Challenge and compare it to the arrow shot in Forbidden Forest you might notice a similarity... In 1983, when most games were simple arcade clones with flat graphics and basic beeps, Forbidden Forest looked like a movie horror experience on a home computer. So, you might scoff at it now but back then it was brilliant!

Now divide that by the factor 10, so you drop to 40 kilobytes. That's the size of The Last Ninja, developed by System 3 and published in 1987. I still struggle to comprehend, even in the slightest, how programmers back then did what they did - and the worlds they created with the limitations they had to work with. I was simply blown away by the graphics (isometric on the C64 with such an amazing level of detail - simply gorgeous) and absolutely mesmerized by the kickass sound. Technical details and the sheer amount of work (and incredible talent) that went into some 80s games completely eluded you as a kid. You simply loved the game and never thought twice about it. Now, being much older, I often find myself looking back at those classics and diving into the technical details: Who created it? How long did it take? Was it a solo project? And most mind-blowing of all: what was the actual size of the game? That last part especially makes my brain melt, and the older I get, the more it sinks in. What those early programmers achieved can only be described as pure genius (and I don’t use that word lightly). Hardware no longer feels like a limiting factor in modern gaming. We have endless megabytes of RAM, terabytes of storage space, and lightning-fast internet. Forty years ago, it was essentially the Stone Age by comparison. Often those games were created by people without formal education in the field, they were mostly self-taught. They also didn't have any software tools and libraries like today, they wrote pretty much everything from scratch, going beyond what was thought to be technically possible. As a kid you have no clue. As an adult I still don't have a clue how they did it. But I have a lot more appreciation and admiration for their work. And I am glad I experienced it then and can enjoy it even now.

99% of shooters from the 80s were horizontally or vertically scrolling - so I guess the dudes over at Konami thought: "Why not make a Galaga 360 version?" Gyruss (1983) was simply brilliant. Graphics, sound effects, music, and gameplay - the perfect mix. Another one of those arcades that you'd recognize instantly by its sound effects when walking into an arcade mall back in the day. Kim Köbke holds the record of 70,736,950 points set during a game of 62 hours and 23 minutes in 2019. I don't even know how that's humanly possible...

One of the best early 80s games ever is Choplifter, from 1982, developed by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund. It also became one of the best selling games ever for the Apple II. I first saw and played this at a friend's house. We had a handrittwen "Highscore" list that we updated over several months, signed by all players present when we played it. One simple rule was that highscores only counted when at least one other person was present and signed it off. I wished that list didn't get lost in time. Early 80s gaming included so many things that don't exist anymore today... handwritten high score lists, drawn dungeon maps, and level codes.

There was a time when Bullfrog Productions were the Rolling Stones of Gaming. Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Powermonger... but most importantly Syndicate (1993) left a huge mark in the 90s as an isometric real-time tactical and strategic game. It is set in a dystopian future in which corporations have replaced governments and puts the player in control of a corporation fighting for global dominance. You go on countless missions all over the world, eliminate targets, blow up stuff, research weapons and equipment, and upgrade your team of cybernetically modified agents attempting to take control of a particular country. The graphics blew me away at the time, the music and sound effects were spot on, the vibe was very dark/dystopian, and it felt like a very fresh new concept when it was published. I don't think anyone who played games in the 90s would not know Syndicate.

The Game Boy was launched in 1989, sold almost 120 million units, and was eventually discontinued in 2003 - an incredible lifespan for a handheld console, the longest ever, unless I am overlooking another? One of the games that was availabe with the launch was Super Mario Land, and it became one of its highest selling titles (18 million cartridges), being part of the early and massive success of the Game Boy. By the way, all this with a mere 8 KB of RAM. That's 1/8th of the good old C64. Super Mario Land was essentially a perfect game, getting the absolute maximum out of the Game Boy at the time. I remember that even my mother and sister playing it, while before that computers games were really not their thing at all.

Galaga (Namco, 1981) You could hear it from a mile away and were magically drawn toward it when entering an arcade. It was usually the most packed machine, surrounded by kids watching a “pro” play. I didn’t have much money back then, so I could afford maybe three or four games, but I’d still hang out with my brother for another hour or two just watching others play. I remember one time a guy was on a serious streak but started sweating and losing his grip on the joystick. Another kid ran to the bathroom, grabbed paper towels, and handed them to him so he could wipe his hands and the joystick between stages. Everyone cheered him on while making sure no one crowded too close. Early multiplayer co-op mode! Arcades were a world of their own. The games and graphics were so far ahead of what my Atari 2600 and C64 could do. That magic slowly faded in the late 80s when the Amiga (and later PCs) caught up.

Partnered with SwiftXR and a talented software developer to create a virtual world of my exhibition for people who cannot make it. The challenge I gave was, how can we create an interactive experience that is not just looking at art? So flash games were developed, and more indepth interactions with each painting. It launches the day after the opening. To my age mates, I hope you experience the nostalgia of when we played flash games and used colorful interactive online education.

If there is one sound I will remember until my final days, it will be the refueling sound of the jet. What was your first computer and the very first game you played on it? (Not a game that you played at your friend's place or at the arcades - but the first game on your very own first computer)

Other markets - such as Germany - didn't have such a known and established gaming industry, but some smaller teams and lesser known companies. One of those was Aegis Interactive Entertainment, basically consisting of German duo Rolf-Dieter Klein and Martin Ulrich. What they created in 1986 still looks incredibly gorgeous today, 40 years later: Ports of Call Granted, the gameplay is not overly complex - you buy ships, trade goods, face the occasional action sequence challenge, and slowly see your bank account grow (or shrink). However, that simplicity in terms of gameplay doesn't mean that game was bland. The graphics were absolutely wonderful at the time (and still are), the music and sound effects were superb, and the game had a really good flow. Not sure whether it was that known outside of Germany (no PR or marketing power for a small company back then without a big publisher), but I think it's one of Germany's finest games of the 80s.

I know some people would pick Defender of the Crown or It Came from the Desert, but for me, Wings stood out with its great graphics, music, design, and overall feeling of immersion. The career mode and mission briefings felt like you were in an old war movie. It was also really tough, especially the dogfights. The sound effects when your plane was hit by bullets always let your heart sink a little. Cinemaware didn’t last very long, and I’ve always wondered why a studio that made so many good games couldn’t keep going. Sure, piracy was a big problem in the 80s and 90s, and that hurt everyone, not just them. Still, it’s a shame they only laste from 1986 to 1991.

The C64 sound chip SID (Sound Interface Device) is an absolute stroke of genius. The guy behind it is Robert Yannes. Here is a quote for his motivation when he designed the chip in 1982: "I thought the sound chips on the market, including those in the Atari computers, were primitive and obviously had been designed by people who knew nothing about music". That last part hits pretty hard, lol. The rest is history. If you need convincing, just listen to this epic intro music for Arkanoid from Martin Galway. That tune is 40 years old and easily stands the test of time. C64 was such a glorious computer.

Any fans of Sim Ant who played this wonderful game back in the day? Maxis created so many of these "Sim" games, starting - of course - with Sim City, so when Sim Ant was published in 1991, I was pretty intrigued. Not sure if you were one of those who had an "ant farm" back in the 80s, but I did. Playing this one for the first time was pure chaos, I had basically no clue what to do (I usually read the manual after several attempts with any new game I had). You take on the role of an ant in a colony of black ants. The goal is to survive, grow and eventually conquer the whole garden against red ants and other bugs... and then spread and take over the house to drive the family nuts, with the ultimate goal of them having to sell the house. Savage, lol! It felt like a pretty experimental game in some sense, open ended, requiring a lot of trial and error, patience and practice. Highly rewarding if you were willing to put in the time.
