Both of these people are correct, and both are incorrect. It’s correct that younger generations were sold a false bill of goods regarding college degrees. We were expected (by society, educators, parents, and employers) to go to college, but—unlike in our parents’ generation—a college degree does not guarantee a... show more

I say this as someone who went to a state school and paid the last of my student loan debt while forcibly unemployed during the “pandemic.” Yes, the thought of others not buckling down and doing what I did bothers me. No, it’s not “fair.” But also, society has a vested interest in not having younger people crushed by insurmountable amounts of debt. I think you should be forced to pay back what you borrowed, but interest should be forgiven. But again, only if accompanied by immediate and heavy reform; otherwise, we’ll be in the exact same boat in a decade.

The issue is also just allowing 18 and even sometimes 17 year olds to take out these astronomical loans in the first place. Yes, they’re adults (at 18). But you can also argue we’ve done a bad job of protecting and educating them and have literally set them up for failure by federally guaranteeing student loans, which allows schools to raise tuition essentially with no cap, and then demanding young people go to college, and then allowing them to sign on the dotted line when they really have no notion what they’re signing. This isn’t like purchasing a brand-new car with crazy terms and interest. It’s an education, and society has indoctrinated people for decades to believe that a college degree is not only inherently good but also absolutely essential to success.

The federal student loan system was taken over by the ACA. The interest on the loans was supposed to be used to pay for health care.

Just show me on the loan paperwork where I signed for YOUR loan.

Congrats on not reading any of the post.

Do it, just make the universities that stole the money with nonsense degrees eat it, not taxpayers. If they go bankrupt, oh well. Endowments need to be used to backfill and pay back the debt

When I was in 9th grade a school councilor told my dad that I didnt have the potential to go to college and that I should just transfer to a vocational high school. It considered less of a mental challenge.

If she takes out a mortgage & defaults she just loses what she has already put in. Bankruptcy is also an option. Students loans are inescapable. No matter what happens interest will continue to accrue forever. Gen Z will never see SS but still pay into that so how is that fair?

Degrees have always been a class marker. But they also used to guarantee some sort of minimum intelligence. Now it doesn't even do that.

My oldest went to a private, four-year university, but the rest of them decided to go to the local community college. Great relief on my finances and has turned out to be a good choice for their careers.

Hell no. I'm not paying for brainwashed Communists.

This sounds eerily similar to the SS mess, as well as immigration reform. Everyone knows what to do to fix it, no one wants to touch it.

So because someone told you to do something it’s on the rest of us to make it true ? F off I didn’t go to college and you don’t see me walking around bitching and crying about life

Progressives ruin everything they touch.

The fact that people were stupid enough to get a degree in gender studies while plunging themselves into debt is not the American taxpayers fault.

There is nothing correct about canceling all student debt. That debt is owed to American taxpayers.

I don’t think older generation should pay for the student debt. However, tell the boomer class that our taxes shouldn’t pay their social security when they own their house(s) outright and have pensions and/or 401ks

Are you should shut your stupid fucking mouth you idiot

I'd reform a student loan to more reflect a mortgage, where interest only accrues on the principal and not the interest. Then make it so a certain % always must be principal, that way deferred payments may hurt, but at least once the principal is 0, the debt stops growing.

What an idiot

Now 3 of you are wrong.

🤔💭. Oh hell no pay your fucking debt off yourself you accumulated it so how come you can’t pay it off because you’re an irresponsible douche bag why should taxpayers be responsible for your fucking debt? You entitled a little bitch💸 🤫🫵☠️☠️

Make college more affordable. I’m not paying for some morons decision to learn history at a 60k a year institution.

They should just make the interest be a reasonable 1%

Cancel the interest, abolition DOE and reform the entire system. People used to get useful degrees. Now, kids get degrees with no practical use. We need people to focus on more on practical skills and less on education for the sake of education.

Proof that people are brain dead from Covid shots.

Random college degrees NEVER guaranteed a good job. Even a good degree might not have rated one. Taking out $500k in loans for a degree was NEVER going to work out for you.

University education should be about 10% of what it costs. Get rid of the costly brick and mortar and 100s of admin jobs. Make it just about information and learning.

The one big solution to student loans is to ensure that borrowers make a fixed repayment plan as is with car loans. If the student needs to pay bag in 70 months of a fixed amount irrespective of interest rate changes in the open market their repayment plan is fix. This is one solution that can gain sufficient support from everyone including those who did not take such loans. The current model in which someone takes a loan of 100k and after 30 years still owes more than he/she borrowed is absurd and evil. This has led many into depression and so much more emotional issues. Let the legislators pass a law that ensures that those who borrow going forward have a fixed payment structure with a fixed end date. While those already in debt can have their debt reviewed and based on what they have left should also have a fixed end date for that. This should end 5his issue as a political talking point. Any time something becomes a political talking point, it hardly gets solved because it is needed for next election circle.

Yes, on all counts!

Why anyone would go to college and just take what is basically just a bunch of advanced high school classes is beyond me. If you’re going to secondary school it should be tied directly to a specific career or a degree in something meaningful.

Obama took over student loans so that the interest would help offset the ACA(also a failure). My children held full time employment and we helped to keep their debt low. Neither my wife or I went to college. If a hair stylist and mechanic can figure it out why can’t these kids.

Student debt only? Maybe no tuition totally and provide living expenses when you are in college? And cancel all kind of debt? Right then everyone will debt free? So why pay for goods? We borrow, spend and cancel. So why bother, just free for everything? Right?

This makes a lot of sense.

Never
