As our boat glided through the choppy waters of the Muthupet lagoon, hundreds of seagulls followed, circling, diving, and dancing in the air, drawn by the easy fishing opportunities created by our boat. Muthupet, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu meaning “land of pearls,” is home to the state’s largest mangrove forest. Daybreak over the Muthupet mangroves, where sky meets a living forest of Mangroves. We are truly on a Mangrove Mission, creating and conserving them for generations. Government of Tamil Nadu is reviving these coastal guardians through mass plantation, invasive species removal & community stewardship. During my visit to Muthupet in Thiruvarur, I could see a quiet mangrove revolution, 1,350 hectares of new plantations and 707 hectares of restoration under the Green TN Mission under various schemes. Using innovative techniques like the Fishbone design, the TN Forest Department, with strong local community participation, has planted over 16 lakh saplings, generating 86,597 days of livelihood. Six Village Mangrove Councils are now actively safeguarding and nurturing this ecosystem. Heartening to see resident pelicans and other birds in Ennore. A very fruitful field visit to Ennore Creek with my team to review the mangrove restoration and new plantation work undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, GOTN, after the oil spill in December 2023. With support from the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust, we took a massive eco-restoration drive for Mangroves. Over the past two years, more than 230 hectares of invasive Prosopis have been cleared, making way for new mangrove plantations. 1.6 lakh mangrove seedlings and 2 lakh mangrove associate plants, including species like Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, and Excoecaria agallocha have been planted across 9 villages, including Puzhuthivakkam, Katupalli, and Edayanchavadi. Advanced techniques such as fishbone and linear planting were adopted based on soil and water analysis. The initiative has not only revived the ecosystem but also created local employment. Currently, 32,000 mangrove and 40,000 associate seedlings are being raised to replace casualties using the southwest monsoon. Tamil Nadu is on a Mission to create new Mangrove forests & restore degraded ones.Through strategic afforestation & ecosystem revival efforts, the state is reinforcing its natural coastal defense and fostering biodiversity through Green TN Mission. New Mangrove forests have been planted in 5,937.9 acres while restoration of degraded Mangroves forests has been done in 3,539 acres across 10 districts, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram,Thoothukudi and Chennai. The best news is this is being done with local community participation. This video gives a rare glimpse into the "fishy" proclivities of wolves in our area. The video was taken in spring just a short distance from a creek wolves have fished at for many years. This past spring was the 10th year we have documented wolves hunting and catching fish—a behavior that had not been documented in boreal systems such as ours until our work, in part, because it is a tough behavior to observe. What is particularly fascinating is that this wolf was not only carrying a fish but carrying two of them. This is interesting because when we captured this behavior on video for the first time in 2018, we observed a wolf fishing, drop them on the creek bank, and wade back in to continue fishing. I.e., the wolf was not immediately consuming the fish it caught but rather fishing while the fishing was hot, and then once the fishing cooled down, would consume the fish. And this video seems to provide some additional evidence that it might be a widespread strategy wolves use. Two other interesting tidbits from this video: 1.) The wolf that dropped the fish was a yearling wolf. The wolf that grabbed the fish at the end was a different wolf. More specifically, the breeding female of the Half-Moon Pack and the older sister of the yearling wolf. 2.) Surprisingly, the black bear seemed very perplexed at finding this fish, and just left it alone without even taking a little nibble. We would have expected a bear to readily take a free meal like this but apparently not. We have collected of detailed information on how, when, where, and why wolves hunt fish in our area. The carp had anchored themselves through mass reproduction. Turns out the real solution was already swimming in the same waters. Strong native predators like the blue catfish began devouring the invaders whole. These were the all American fish who had been held back and kept down for years. Once they were allowed to operate at full strength, they controlled the explosion naturally and at no extra cost to the system. The expensive interventions mostly failed. The natives who were built for this kind of competition succeeded. The solution was to allow the native fish to do what they had been built to do all along: defend their homes and offspring with all the ferocity of a mother grizzly. Happy Fishing Master has been incredibly viral and successful in China (debuted at 4th on the charts, behind heavyweights HoK, Eggy Party, and Peace Elite) The game launched in Singapore yesterday, so I downloaded and gave it a whirl and man, what an absolute master class in game design. So many learnings: Simple core loop conferring low barriers of entry to lure users in BUT surprise with depth through RPG-like progression to achieve both ease of onboarding as well as stickiness to stymie churning Reinventing classic fishing genre that is traditionally peaceful and slow with fast-paced exciting content that is highly streamable and leverages the most important UA channel: short form videos Two points above allow for TAM expansion beyond stereotypical “fishing game user”, which is intuitively a smaller older audience. Quick browse of Douyin suggests fairly balanced gender ratio + younger skew in users (streamers ARE younger anyway!) Monetisation philosophy is similar to what we’ve seen recently with AFK JOURNEY: make great content then keep dropping users’ free items in the form of achievement/ engagement rewards so users almost feel obliged to pay something, and we all know the first $1 is always the gateway to far more spending So many more little details but that’s the gist of it.
