A big shout-out to Loco Pilot Das and Assistant Loco Pilot Umesh Kumar of the 15959 Kamrup Express for their swift and heroic action on 16th October in saving a herd of about 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang by applying emergency brakes. Pilots were alerted through a Artificial Intelligence based Detection System which comprehensively covers the track. This incident spotlights the importance of technology to prevent such near-misses. Tamil Nadu’s AI-based surveillance system implemented by us in Madukkarai, Coimbatore has also successfully prevented elephant-train collisions through 24/7 monitoring with thermal cameras and real-time alerts. This is the second-highest railway overbridge (RoB) in India, located over Burdwan railway station. It was announced in 2012, but the MoU between Indian Railways and the State Government was signed in 2015. Indian Railways executed the project, with the cost shared equally between the Railways and the State Government. On 23 September 2019, the Railways announced that some final checks were still pending and that the then Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal, would inaugurate the bridge on 30 September, with a representative from the Mamata government invited. The very next day, a TMC Panchayat Minister reached the bridge site and inaugurated it from wherever he could tie a ribbon. Mamata attended remotely from Birbhum. Since final checks were still ongoing, the minister could not access the bridge itself.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Jain says, "This morning at 5.15 AM, a fire incident was reported in Train No. 12431, the Rajdhani Express travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Nizamuddin, specifically in the rear SLR and B1 coach of the Kota division. Upon noticing the fire, railway staff promptly evacuated all passengers, separated the affected coach from the rest of the train, and informed the fire brigade, state administration, and railway authorities. Immediate action ensured the safety of all passengers. The fire has been almost completely controlled. Three fire brigade units, ambulances, and civil administration are on-site, working collaboratively. Railway officials have arrived, and additional coaches are being arranged from Kota. The remaining portion of the train is expected to depart within 30 to 45 minutes, after which track restoration will begin. This incident has caused some regulation of trains in both directions, affecting approximately 5 to 6 trains... This is the Lichchavi Express pantry car, where police personnel and local staff forcibly occupy railway seats meant for pantry operations. The pantry manager is harassed and helpless, yet these people refuse to vacate the space and sit there as if it’s their personal property. Let’s be blunt: Does the government not pay them a salary? Why this obsession with grabbing railway seats for free? They take salary from taxpayers, misuse government railway property, and show zero respect for rules. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and in the forests of Ramgarh, it took a forest, a railway, and the locals to welcome one into the world. A pregnant elephant lay in labour on the tracks. The forest and railway officials acted swiftly. A coal train was halted for over two hours so the mother could give birth undisturbed. In that pause, a beautiful calf was born. No rush, no harm just a quiet act of kindness. Because sometimes, the most powerful journey begins when we choose to stop 🙂 #elephants #wildlifeconservation

The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Kudos to Ramasubramanian, CF, Bhargava Teja FD, Range officer Manikantan and the entire team 👍 videos FD TN DIPR Tamil Nadu Forest Department MoEF&CC #elephantcalf

The elephant was constantly monitored as it emerged from the forest every night. In this situation, the elephant was anaesthetised at around 2 am on October 17 and was brought under control.
