I have a solution. We should deny all sales of our advanced military tech to any nation such as Germany trash talking us. Watch them come groveling back on their knees.
There is no dilemma here. Only someone locked in a Cold War bunker since 1983 could call this a dilemma. The U.S. today is a clone of Russia, the country Europe spent fifty years arming against. It threatens allies, pulls security guarantees on a whim, and treats European sovereignty as an inconvenience. The only difference between Washington and Moscow right now is the Wi-Fi speed. Russia needs fifteen years to reach the military capability of a mid-sized European state. They are not the urgent threat. American dependency is. Build European. Take the time. Pay the costs. The alternative is to stay hostage to a government that has made its contempt for Europe loudly and repeatedly clear. This was never a close call.
The price of the AEGIS and SPY 6 systems just tripled in price for all you wankers and none for Spain
Sure, go ahead and try to build your own replacement for Aegis and Spy-6. It'll cost you more than you can afford and take years. In the meanwhile your ships will be vulnerable and by the time you build something as good, the US will already have the next generation.
Start developing Europe's own! Even if it takes years and we have to settle for the older systems for now. There is NO alternative, if we don't want to stay dependent and taken hostage by a mentally highly unstable American president.
Yes, NATO countries should use less capable tech to defend themselves at the very moment Russia & China's tech has been exposed as subpar to American tech. - The continued brilliance of EU military strategists, believing capability is a simple plug-and-play game.

Europe wants tech sovereignty, fair enough. But right now, no European radar matches SPY-6 for real upper-tier BMD on a frigate. SMART-L spots 'em far away... then hands the kill to US systems anyway. Germany picking proven capability over 'soon alternatives isn't weakness—it's not wanting to get sunk while waiting.
It will take them years and billions to build their own and by the time they do it will have been surpassed by American technology. They simply don’t have the money or the resources to compete.

No brainer. Use what is best right now. Develop in Europe something much better and replace when ready.

Excellent idea. Spend decades trying to replicate existing technology. Which will be obsolete by the time it’s ready to deploy. Europe in a nutshell.
Qu'ils choisissent l'AEGIS comme ça, le moment voulu les américains leur couperont certaines fonctionnalités en fonction de la situation. Le matin on coupe les F-35 et l'après-midi les frégates AEGIS...et le lendemain, on leur dit que finalement il n'y a rien dans les bombes atomiques B-61 de l'OTAN. Vive la vraie souveraineté dans le domaine militaire opérationnel et de l'industrie militaire. Seule la France en Europe peut s'en targuer. Cela nous a couté et nous coutera cher mais rien ne vaut la liberté.

Frigate vs Destroyer?
I don’t know how much adaptation must be done on F127, but there are some different European platforms for the combat management system and for the radar that have similar capabilities than Aegis + SPY-6
The T45 fit is good and its European. Currently being upgraded for BMD. We should be building the same designs and building them in quantity to amortize the NRE. US purchases should be for unique capability only and that should be reduced as much as possible going forward.
@clyntonK1 Air defense frigates are wasteful. Even 4th rate nations can now field enough land based cruise missiles and drones to exhaust the launch cells of a frigate in a matter of hours. Surface warfare ships like this are a waste.
They can make their own everything, but not in the short term and not at a price they can afford. They need to get their energy policy straight before anything else.
IF the ship is going to spend 90% of its time in dock waiting for repairs, then it doesn't really need the best air defense radar system.
Honestly, we shouldn’t be selling these systems to foreign countries anyway. AEGIS is in high demand, they are difficult to build and we need them for our own ships.
Sovereignty is more important. We already saw how unreliable USA is.
If only Europe had met their commitment on military spending, they might have actually developed systems that worked effectively. Oh well, best of luck to them

I guess this is good news for all the European manufacturers of combat radar... <stand by> I have just been informed that there are no European companies capable of fielding a combat radar system, but Germany has implemented a mandatory struggle session for each US purchase.
The ignorance displayed by europeans in the replies is staggering. You have no equivalent system and to build one would take years. It's like you just woke up and started demanded indigenous technology when none exist and threats on the rise. You people are learning some hard lessons 😂
